Indeed. I dread to think what our fixture list would look like if we hadn't had the new pitch put in.

Back in 1963, the combination of a really bad winter and Sutton reaching the Amateur Cup final meant that, after playing Wimbledon at Wembley on 4th May, the team still had EIGHT league games still to play, plus the Surrey Senior Cup final. They ended up playing their last 10 games in 21 days, finally finishing on 25th May. Now THAT is fixture congestion! In those days they weren't namby-pamby prima donna types, so I imagine they just got on with it without any fuss or complaint.

I think leagues might have been more strict about finishing the league programme and less strict about when, in those days! Was it 2002-03 when we were supposed to play two games on the final day of the season to get them all in? The second one was cancelled in the end (Hendon, I think).

You are being too generous Stewart. It was NO subs back then ! The first substitutes in England were not allowed until 1965, just one per team, and famously the first one to be used was Keith Peacock of Charlton.

Lowestoft play in the National League North not South and our manager is called Paul Doswell not Paukl Doswell, but certainly I do like that he is referred to as 'the' Paukl Doswell. Yet another well put together article though, do enjoy reading them.

Further to this, I was curious to know how the players fared after the disappointment of losing that Wembley cup final, so I checked the records. Of the 9 subsequent games, they won 7 of them, only losing 2, scoring 26 goals in the process. Deep respect to Messrs Hermitage, Bladon, Gamblin & co.

It was a pity there were no subs for that Cup Final. Our centre half was concussed and that is partly the reason Eddy Reynolds scored the four goals with his head.

The first season U's could name a sub was the 66/7 season. I believe there was some restriction on use and that was where a player was injured and couldn't continue. U's first substitiute in a competitive match was Chris Davey on 31/12/66 in a SSC tie with Walton & Hersham. The first league sub was on 11/02/67 at Hitchin. Some fella called Roy Hodgson. His only appearance for U's first team.

Regarding the winter of 1962/63 , as i remember it there were hardly any games played between Boxing Day and the beginning of March.
