They've tried before and got refused ny the FA, don't know why. Can't believe the owners really think the people of Brighton will flock to them just because they've changed the name. Just like I haven't noticed that Hampton & Richmond's gates increased as the people of Richmond flocked to the Beveree. I suspect it has more to do with the owners ego than any real expectation of more punters.

I think they just went ahead with it previously, not realising that FA sanction was required so had to make a reversal.
I'll buck the trend, my limited understanding was that the original name came from a local housing estate and most of those connections have since dissolved or diluted and with no particular long-standing history (not meant in a demeaning fashion), why not try the name change and try to raise the profile with their community. I can't really see why the commotion if I'm honest, if there was a group that were particularly attached to the original name or would feel disenfranchised then perhaps it would be a different story; if Brighton & Hove Albion feel challenged by it then they can appeal against it, I may be missing something but I can't see why the would or should. Just my view!

Hmm sort of agree with Millsy here if there are no connections, but Brighton City, surely Brighton West End perhaps?

I seem to remember BHA were the reason behind it not happening last time. I think they protested and it got shelved.

And I like BHA (they were once my local team), but I still fail to see what it's got to do with them. Hayes and Yeading didn't stop Brook House changing their name to AFC Hayes...

I think 'Brighton Whitehawk' would be a good compromise.

LOLZ!!
Frankly, until recently I had no idea where Whitehawk were based so, as an emerging club, I have no problem with them trying to identify, and inform the wider public, about their widening roots
