With the usual ZERO advantage at the semi-final stage for the teams finishing second and third.

With the usual ZERO advantage at the semi-final stage for the teams finishing second and third. How would you change it? 4th v 5th, winners play away to 3rd. 2nd place play the winner at home in the final?

Without wishing to go over old ground (because this topic was covered extensively after we got mugged by Dover), but, yes. That is, in fact, the exact suggestion I proposed at the time!

There's a far more simple solution to make sure the higher placed team gets home advantage. Don't play two legs.

Home advantage in a single game is a fair reward for finishing higher in the league whilst keeping the benefits of the play-offs.

Thats similar to how it works in Super League...if you finish 5th and want to make the Grand Final you have to do it the hard way!

the play-offs have been around for many many years it's a lottery, changing it will never happen, you don't win anything for coming 2nd or 3rd depending in what division your in, the best teams normally shine through.

So we're pretty much on the same wavelength in that there are just three matches in total to find a winner. With my method though, the second-placed team only need play one game whereas the teams that finish fourth or fifth need to win three games. But, as Dannyboy says, it's not going to change. The cronies at the F.A. have about as much imagination as a pan-fried pea!

Surprised none of you picked up on what Dos had to say about National League promotion, in general, in an interview with NLP a few weeks ago. He was calling for a lot more movement as well run Clubs were being held back. 6 down relegation from the Natioinal, 3 each to North and South, and 2 up by right from each, with the 3rd being a play-off.

6 down would be a ridiculous state of affairs. 4 is about right.

Let's worry about this in April I was thinking actually a case of 3rd time lucky - under Dos in the Ryman we lost 2 play offs and won the league. In this league we lost 2 play offs, just missing out one season and writing off last season when we were never at the races, this is the third time we are likely to be involved in a title/play off race. Could this be our year? In terms of home/away advantage - we've still lost all of our home play off games (Kingstonian, Welling, Dover), but have managed to draw 2 out of our 3 away play off fixtures. Mind you, we didn't have the pitch we have now.
