Thought the club was finished reading that headline, but it just turned out to be poor word choice. Demise means death. He means decline really, but I suppose he was using demise in a poetic sort of sense. Anyway, W&H aren't dead...yet.

The referee is supposed to award a goal kick in that circumstance as far as I'm aware, not sure why that didn't happen in this instance, the laws of the game were changed to accommodate this and avoid 'walk-ins' at the other end, disputes and false goal differences / betting irregularities.
I only saw some of the press surrounding this and don't know if it was mentioned or discussed, should have been. If the defending team score an 'accidental' own goal in this scenario a corner should be awarded.
This first scenario happened in one of our PSFs and the referee rightly gave a goal kick I recall.

What on earth was the goalie doing in this instance ? Not sure what the laws say but all this giving the ball back to the opposition has always been a nonsense in my opinion. The ref is meant to stop the game if necessary and then have a dropped ball. All this kicking the ball out of play started one year in a world cup but has led to confusion ever since.

I agree. If you put the ball out of play the other team should be able to do what they like with it. It is indeed a nonsense.

Perhaps the writer, with some licence, is trying to convey that the vibrant Walton & Hersham FC of old, no longer exists, and has been replaced by the shell which remains today
"Decline" might be a more accurate term, purely in the literal sense, but on the other hand may not satisfactorily convey the enormous decay which the writer is attempting to expose

That is what I meant by "in a poetic sense" and you describe it very nicely. I was misled by the title, but if that was intended to grab attention then it did its job.

I don't know the answer but wonder if the difference was the other was direct from a drop ball?
