Great to hear another one of Sol's "AYUNGAAA!" battlecries 8 minutes and 14 seconds in.

Still can't see what the pen was for but definitely should have had on when their 'keeper bundled Jonah over.
Can see why ref sent their fella off but also see the other side of that argument too.

Somewhat surprised watching that. Was expecting the red card to be a doubtful one given most of the comments since the game. Looks a clear cut red to me. He’s come down high studs up on the ankle, that sort of challenge just isn’t allowed anymore. I think I’m in the wrong though as nearly everyone else doesn’t agree! Oh well.
Certainly no angle on the penalty decision that shows anything. Must have happened before the camera scanned across.

I'm with you on this one Gareth, I thought it looked like a proper ankle breaker. Good shout from the ref, as those kind of challenges are particularly difficult to spot in real time.

This may have been what the penalty was awarded for as the ball comes in : Attachments:

Slight suspicion of contact there.

Reminded me of a penalty against Kane in the World Cup v Panama I think. It’s not as if the Wrexham defender wasn’t warned at length. After the award he then started doing the “I didn’t do anything” bit!

It's hard to dispute that this is a 'lunge with excessive force', so is surely Serious Foul Play - Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.

The penalty was for holding back Charlie as he got past the defender, and was obvious, though not in the scope of the highlights film.
The ref had to stop the two of them just previously with the Wrexham player saying that Charlie was "illegally" using his head to make contact and push his opponent. He probably had a point too, and I'm sure were it the other way round we would be complaining too. Charlie would probably argue he was just getting low to (potentially) go under the arms of the defender (which is what he ended up doing).
Without the ref's "talk" I very much doubt the penalty would have been given, but effectively he had just said "I'm watching you two". Once Charlie had got past his marker and then had a good chance of a clean header as the ball came across the (naturally instinctive?) tug on his arm by the defender, which unbalanced Charlie such that he was prevented from making that header, the contact is sufficient reason to award a penalty.
In short the defender was either stupid, naïve, or both to tug his opponent given the warning he had just had. The only defence is it is instinctive (so can't be helped) or that it happens all the time and referees never give them so it's worth doing anyway in trying to prevent a possible goal.
It would be good to see this applied more (the World Cup, eventually, saw this happen). What would be even better would be to see it applied not just more, but consistently too, such that it would no longer be a surprise to see such awards. I'm not holding my breathe on that though.
