Often think you can get more out of a defeat in pre-season than a win and I suspect Matt G will have plenty to ponder on following a 2-0 reverse against "the old boys".
It was a scrappy game really with a couple of flash points and a generally feisty mood, especially after Kenny D had upended Roarie D. Roarie was down for a while but not injured enough for reprimanding his former team mate with a couple of shoves in the chest once he was on his feet. Having dropped to the NLS, Roarie may have to get used to being dumped on his arse this season.
H&W looked the more cohesive team which is probably not surprising since half a dozen of them were playing together last season. U's did welcome back Jamie B and Dale B for their first 45 mins of action but for much of the first half the home side was on top and eventually scored after they had engineered a left to right move and Jonah Ayunga couldn't really miss when the ball finally fell to him. U's best chance of the half fell to George T-F but he slid his shot wide of the post.
Second half U's were much better. Omar B got through but saw his attempt deflected wide by Ross W and the 'keeper won the next battle between the two as well when he saved Omar's spot-kick low down to his right. Not sure why H&W reacted to the decision as they did as it looked a nailed on pen to me and two yellow cards were shown to the home side to add to the one in the first half for what was the most ridiculous showing of dissent I think I have seen in a PSF. It was a corner mate and you made yourself looked stupid.
By the time Ayunga fired in the second from close range, U's starting eleven had been changed by probably nine players as Matt G stuck to his word by giving all the squad game time.
The way some of the H&W team reacted at times suggested the win was more important to them. Certainly their social media has gone overboard; it was a PSF FFS.
As for U's, stuff to work on but then the players are still getting to know each other so that was always likely to be the case.
