Still one of finest Sutton sides I've ever seen.

Lenny Dennis and Paul McKinnon - have we ever had a better front two?

Those of us who saw Macca in his prime were the lucky ones. We've not had a forward since that has come close I feel, and probably (although before my time and others) Charlie Vaughan would be the only one prior to do so.

Those I've spoken with in the past who saw him play reckon Charlie Vaughan was the best Sutton player they ever saw. As well as being in our Hall of Fame, he is also in Charlton Athletic's and, I believe, is still their record goalscorer in top-flight football.

The legend that is Micky Joyce has to be mentioned too. 9 goals in a game against Leatherhead on 4 November 1982. Amazing. 252 goals for the club I believe. Had he not broken his leg at Bangor City in the FA Trophy semi final I feel sure we would have won the final in 1981

Considering he broke his leg in the semi-final at Bangor, Mick did remarkably well to score in the second leg back at Sutton !
He missed the Final after being injured in a hefty challenge by Slough's Eric Young.
Age comes to us all JR !!

That took me back. My second Sutton match as very wee nipper.
Also took me back when at the end of the clip on the top right hand corner of the screen you used to get that small square that flickered when an ad break was about to arrive!

Loadsa memories there....forgot Lenny twice went so close to scoring in that first half. Its odd what you pick out seeing the old place 30+ years on. I had forgotten about the characteristic 4 floodlight pylons down each side of the ground. And Barrie Williams...what a class act he was! Impeccably smart for the post match interview (with the diction to match) and his "Michael Stephens".... (reminiscent of Cloughie and his "Edward Sheringham") !!!!

I had the privilege and pleasure of watching Charlie Vaughan in my first year of support (1945/46)and he was certainly without equal. I only saw him for a season and a bit before he signed for Charlton and that was mainly in home matches, couldn't afford many away matches. I was, however, positioned right behind the goal when he scored the only goal at Richmond Road to beat Woking in the Surrey Senior Cup and still have a vivid memory of it in my mind.

Wow - 32 years ago, where has the time gone? I remember the day so clearly. A 2pm kick off since I believe our floodlights were not good enough for TV had we kicked off at 3pm. Feeling excited at the large crowd but also a bit pissed off since our spot on the terrace where we always stood was occupied by people I had never seen at GGL before. ( Childish I know.) Even when we went one down feeling we could still win the game and then finally the elation when Mark Golly scored. Fast forward 32 years and here I am in Australia - initially reading this post and watching the highlights on my phone , in shorts and a tee shirt whilst on my balcony with a load of black cockatoos flying by. Quite bizarre.

And that was followed by what I consider the best Sutton display of all time in the replay at Ayresome Park. Nigel Golley (I think it was) hit the bar in the last minute before we eventually lost 1-0 in extra time to a team containing Gary Pallister and Tony Mowbray that was top of the old divison 2 and was promoted at the end of the season. I'd love to see footage of that one again.
