Not really. Most were out of their depth. The keeper had an absolute shocker of a first half and to think he was on the bench at Chesterfield. The concerning thing for me is the gulf between the academy side and the first team. It is unreasonable to suggest that any of the academy players are ready to step up to first team football but you could also argue that at least one of our first team squad did not stand out as superior to to our opponents. Not being around other quality players is a factor but not the total reason. You could also argue that Crossley Lemar made a good choice in leaving the academy to get first team football at a higher level. On the performance last night if you think being in the Acadamy side will lead to progression into the first team you are mistaken. The majority of youth/academy players will never play for the first team. The hope is one or two will progress in the coming years.

Not sure what some were expecting. The step up from academy to Isthmian Premier is pretty big. Think Suburban League to ILP and you wouldn't be far off target.
Difficult for the senior players to have much influence when the ball is not retained. That said a fair few decent openings were not capitalized on generally because of the final ball or best option wasn't made/taken.
The SSC lost its shine many years ago, although I for one would love to win it one more time. But fans have to accept it is well down the list of priorities and the club 's relatively small squad needs some level of protection as a result.

One could go back over the last ten years and read a 1st team bio which will contain something like "Player x started their career as Premier League academy" which probably will apply to at least 60% of all our players. If an academy player from a PL side ends up establishing their career at level 5, then it's very difficult to expect virtually anyone from our own academy doing the same off the bat. If you look at our latest products - Crossley, Jude Mason and Brad Pearce. All 3 are playing lower level football 2 levels below. No finger of blame at all, but with the resources available to the academy, anyone who thinks that it's a nurturing ground for a whole crop of future SUFC stars is probably a little misguided.

I think the last player to play in the Sutton youth side and eventually play at our level and higher is Louis John.

Agree with everything that’s being discussed.
This is a question to all.
Why has Bradley Pearce - dropped down the levels - unless I was imagining his displays for us when Paul D was in charge he looked a right prospect.
Or did my eyes deceive me?

Why has Bradley Pearce - dropped down the levels - unless I was imagining his displays for us when Paul D was in charge he looked a right prospect. Or did my eyes deceive me? Age old question - we've had a load of players who have suffered the same fate. Being talented as a footballer isn't the only attribute that matters. The mental one matters just as much. In other sports it's much more obvious e.g tennis. Technically you can be great but you don't win grand slam after grand slam without mental strength. But in football you see similar traits - this partially explains why players work well for some managers than others. In terms of Brad, it may well be that the talent is there but the maturity/mental strength isn't quite there yet. I'll put my head on the block here and say this could explain why Dylan didn't make it here at Sutton too.

I believe Dylan was told to get fit during the close season and he came back heavier. I assume it was not muscle!

It's something of a management skill, resting just enough first-teamers while still retaining good chances of progressing, but the art also involves blending youth and inexperience in certain areas of the pitch. Where Matt got it wrong on Tuesday night was overloading the defence (and the bench) with academy lads. It was basically the equivalent of throwing in the towel.
My thinking beforehand was that restricting the selection to four youngsters might have done the trick. I was a little disappointed when I saw the team sheet, given that we were out of all other Cup competitions and only about three wins from league safety.

Dose it really matter, it’s only the Surrey cup and as I said before it gives the academy a chance too play a competitive game....

Why has Bradley Pearce - dropped down the levels - unless I was imagining his displays for us when Paul D was in charge he looked a right prospect. Or did my eyes deceive me? Brad did not look out of place last season and he's definitely the one who looked most likely to break through. I'll say that Matt has earned the right recently for his judgement to not come into question too much, but i still feel we missed out on retaining a couple of talented youngsters who may have had the ability to break through. Obviously this is hindsight but it looks like we will be safe with games to spare and nothing to play for, there is no better situation than that to give fringe players an extended run in the side and see if they're up to it. It appears that opportunity will be missed

Fingers crossed he gets a chance (Bradley and the other boys).
I really believe it’s opportunity and backing from the management.
