With everyone wondering what to do after the conclusion of the Hartlepool match on Saturday, the combined genius minds of Sutton Yoof and Gandermonium got together to come up with a solution. After several beers, vodka mixers, jaegerbombs and much much more, the decision was made to set up an unofficial supporters side with games to be played at the weekends (any further government action permitting) .
I am currently in the process of trying to arrange fixtures with several prospective opponents, and hope to update you in the week. The idea is to play games at GGL, with admission free (obviously, charging people to watch us idiots would be nothing short of theft) but having collection buckets round the ground for any donations to the club. This, in addition to the pitch hire fee and any bar takings if it stays open, would hopefully help bring some much-needed money into the club.
Obviously I completely understand anyone wanting to avoid social situations, but if people did fancy coming out and watching some football (and let's be honest, I doubt the crowd would reach anything considered a 'mass gathering') then hopefully we can provide something for you - and of course the club.
As it stands I have a pitch booked for Saturday at 2pm...just waiting on our illustrious opponent to be confirmed.
We could do with a couple more faces so if anyone wants to play a part, or indeed if you know any potential opposition who might fancy the challenge of a fixture at the home of football, drop me a text on 07508 329702.
Cheers, and hopefully see you all soon
Johnnie

I don't want to be a killjoy because I think it is a great idea.
BUT in view of the FA pronouncements since your post - please check with Ray Ward Suttton United Club Sec and your referee (if qualified) whether the game is OK with SUFC insurers and Surrey FA instructions to referees about friendly matches.

I'm in touch with the club, as of Tuesday morning everything was fine. Of course the situation is changing very quickly, and if it does have to be cancelled I will update on here.

Some news people, game confirmed as ON this Saturday
Saturday 2pm Sutton United Supporters vs Middlesbrough Supporters South Gander Green Lane
A big thanks to the MSS boys who have agreed to send a team down despite actually being quite a good side. However, don't rule the U's out. Like the FA Cup tie of 1988 there may be a shock on the cards. With the Sutton side featuring the pace of wreck-it Beckett, the agility of car park Ryan in goal, and of course my famous 18-yard first touch, anything could happen.
We may even have a special guest making an appearance, watch this space...
To address some concerns that have been brought up, the two teams are taking precautions to be as sensible as possible:
- Nobody showing any sign of any symptoms will be allowed to play, both sides have large squads to cover late dropouts - The bar will not be open, and players will be encouraged to turn up late and leave straight after the game - Changing rooms use is discouraged, to be honest I doubt they'll even be open
Of course any spectators who do turn up virtually have the freedom of the ground, that's less of a precaution than a fact really, but of course maintain social distance from the other handful of people who do turn up. I'll leave a bucket for any 'pay what you want' donations out without personally managing it.
Final note: should we get put into lockdown before Saturday the game will of course not take place. Keep an eye out
Take care
Johnnie

This sounds great I'll be there. Divided loyalties of course as I played left back for MSS back in the APSCIL league in the early 1990's.
If its any encouragement we were completely sh*t. During an 8-0 defeat to Charlton supporters our goalkeeper, who was wearing trackie bottoms with stirrups, let a trickler in without even diving. When we remonstrated with him he said 'I can't get these dirty lads, our lass is going out in them tonight'

Others won't so for their benefit: the Association of Provincial Football Supporters' Clubs in London.
It ran football friendlies and a darts league. Its primary function was defending well organised travel on scheduled trains from London to the provinces [during the height of football hooliganism] from blanket restrictions on football specials. Before the introduction of railcards of all types APFSCIL member clubs could book a block of train tickets at half the price of a day return so they were well worth joining for the regular exile.

In light of today’s announcements with the closure of further public venues, including all sporting/leisure facilities. Please tell this game is no longer going ahead?
Whilst I get and appreciate the efforts behind it and we all want to raise money for our club, the measures introduced are for a reason, nothing about this game signifies social distancing or is in line with government advice.
As for the point that no one with symptoms will be allowed to play, I shouldn’t have to point out that you can be asymptomatic for anything between 5 - 11.5 days. So you’d have no idea if those playing were ill or not.
If one or more you come in contact with someone tomorrow that is infected and then becomes ill and needs treatment, you’ll be taking away NHS resources from those that need it the most.
Social distancing isn’t about you. It’s about protecting the most vulnerable.
This is just irresponsible.

I do think events have overtaken us all and I can't disagree with your post. Sorry chaps but we all need to do what we can to protect ourselves and others.

It's really upsetting that at such a time of uncertainty, fear and isolation the things we normally rely on to keep us going, keep us sane and keep us looking after ourselves are the things we can't or shouldn't do.
We do need to socialise, stick together, do things we enjoy doing and those things are absolutely vital. But we do have to draw the line at things that will put others at risk. This thing kills.
I'm sorry but I agree with the above posts.
