Just for a change, I found myself with a bit of spare time this evening so I promptly wasted it by compiling a National League crossword, which you can find by clicking hereAll clues refer to National League clubs (all three divisions) and all solutions are either the name of a team, a team's nickname or the name of a ground. I recycled one of my clues from the last puzzle I posted on here so if you did that then you get a freebie answer. Please be nice: this is my first ever attempt at compiling a whole crossword and I know it's a bit tinpot, the grid is a mess and the clues aren't all completely watertight...but hopefully it works! Also please let me know if you spot any mistakes so I can fix them.

On the other hand I have stared at clues for 40 odd years and never got anywhere near solving a single one. Maybe I’m a simpleton or maybe my brain is crammed full of pointless junk that it can’t handle them, either way my barren spell continues. Two more hours of my life gone trying to solve a clue. Looking forward to seeing some answers and working out how......

I always used to think my brain just didn't work that way, until a colleague started talking me through the crosswords he was doing while Working Very Hard at the office. Once I'd learned the little tricks and techniques it opened up a whole new world to me!
If you want I can talk you through some of these clues and solutions - send me a PM to avoid spoiling it for anyone who actually wants to do the crossword, if such a person exists.
I think this one is maybe a little hard, but I felt it had to be on the tricky side because there is only a limited number of National League teams, nicknames and grounds - if you get completely stuck on a clue you can always just rattle through that list until you find a solution that fits!

Creating a decent crossword can be very difficult. Many years ago I compiled a cryptic crossword myself (it wasn’t about football, so I shan’t bother recreating it here). Although I was quite pleased with some of the clues, my overall feeling was that it was a bit naff. I managed to fit all the clues inside a large square grid, but it was nowhere near rotationally symmetrical, which proper crosswords are supposed to be. Anyway, kudos to you for coming up with something. Over time I became quite good at solving these, but I suspect I’ve lost too many neurons now!

I could probably have made a better grid if I had more time but that site puts it together automatically and you can't move anything around or choose where anything goes. There are a few just sort of hanging there and they annoy me a bit!
