Good stuff Dave,thanks.
Tom Graveney was recalled by England after a three year absence for the Lord's Test against West Indies in 1966 and made 96 and 30 not out.It was the first test i went to and was famous for a big partnership between the great Gary Sobers and his cousin David Holford.
At The Oval Graveney made 165 and England won by an innings. This game will be remembered for a last wicket partnership between the unlikely duo of John Snow and Ken Higgs.Halfway through it i remember leaving home to go to Craven Cottage for the first day of a new football season and the first round of games since England won the World Cup.Everton beat Fulham 1-0 with a goal from new signing (from Blackpool) Alan Ball.

Hello Billy, I hope you are well. I don't really remember the game, I just have this vivid memory of running up Central Rd. Worcester Park to find my dad (they were outside the greengrocer's) to tell him Graveney was out. Dad wasn't even a cricket fan ! These days my parents would have had a visit from someone about allowing an 8-year old out on his own !
My first proper memory of the actual cricket is the 68 series v the Aussies (in particular that last session at the Oval with Underwood after the rain) but I don't even need to look it up to name most of those Aussies: Lawry, Redpath, Chappell, Sheehan, Walters, Inverarity, Gleeson, Jarman, Mackenzie. Not sure of the last two, Cowper and Mallett? I'm not sure I can name as many of the England team !! Naturally, as I would do for every series for the next 7 or 8 years, I re-enacted every test in my back garden.
My first football game was at Guildford City in 67, no idea who against, and then Aldershot v Fulham in a pre-season friendly (Macedo, Cohen, Haynes, Earl, Barrett). Both were with my brother-in-law, who also took me to Wembley to see the World Speedway Championships. Ove Fundin won I think but all I really remember is the noise.

All well here on St Dunstans Hill thanks Dave, hope you are too.I've only been outside the front gate once since getting back from holiday on 14th January, and that was just to Gander Green lane to the Doctor at the end of February.
The other two Aussies were Connolly and Mallett.I saw that 1968 game at The Oval but unfortunately not on the "mopping up" day! When we were on holiday and Cricket watching in 2012 in St Lucia the Aussie party stayed at our hotel and i got to speak with John Inverarity. He was of course last man out LBW to Underwood and still seemed unhappy about it all those years later. This game also saw the start of the " D'Oliveira affair."
I remember going to Fulham and Chelsea from Wimbledon in the sixties and you'd see the likes of Tony Macedo and Ian Hutchinson going on the tube,i can't quite see that happening now !
This morning i watched The Bromley Boys.Anyone else here seen it and got any thoughts ?There seemeed to be a lot of factual stuff and a lot more made up.In the film a last game win against champions Enfield saved them but looking at the table that year , 1969–70 Isthmian League, they finished 5 points adrift.Sutton finished 3rd.

No relegation from the Isthmian League in those days Billy, it was a stand alone competition.
Only 3rd, and FA Cup 4th Round, I'm amazed the fans didn't call for the manager to be sacked.....

It was a strange mix of fact and fiction. They implied relegation to a North Kent league or somesuch.I see in my Hillingdon Boro' programme that Sutton beat them 3-1 at GGL.

After joining the Isthmian League in 1963 we lost on our first league two visits to Hayes Lane, we then won twice and drew in 1967/8. After that we won on every trip until we went into the Conference in 1986, that was 11 consecutive away wins there. We also had a winning sequence of 14 league games in that period, home and away, and from summer 66 until 1986 our overall league record was played 26, won 24 and drew 1.

I have seen the Bromley Boys and was somwehat confused by some of the scenarios it developed. Not sure if the book was the same? As for that 3-1 win, that was notable for Ken Grose (a defender) coming off the bench to play up front and netting a hat-trick to spare U's blushes.

I knew Ken all those years ago ! He used to join in our games on the green in Love Lane outside Alec and Keith Walden's house.I think he was their brother in law but my memory is not what it was !
I've not read the book. But found this on the net.........Locations Numerous scenes were filmed in Bromley and surrounding areas, but Crockenhill F.C. was used as a substitute location for the old Hayes Lane stadium.
I played many times at Hayes Lane as Crystal Palace used it for at least one whole season around 1970 for South East Counties home fixtures.

If my calculations are right that game (Bromley 3-1) was on a Thursday Mark.I looked it up because i thought i might have been there midweek.I couldn't have been though as i would certainly have remembered a Kenny Grose hat trick !
