Just heard Nobby Stiles has died, another one of the โ66 heroes gone. Who can ever forget him dancing after the whistle had blown. RIP mate ๐

A sad day.I loved that man.Rest In Peace.
He played in the greatest team i ever saw play. Dunne,Brennan,Dunne,Crerand,Foulkes,Stiles,Connelly,Charlton,Herd,Law and Best. That eleven played virtually unchanged through the 1964/65 Championship winning season, and there were no subs.
I have both his books here. When my Wife called me to the phone some years ago a voice said "Hello Bill, this is Nobby Stiles" and it was! A friend of our sons was at a dinner he was speaking at and got him to ring me.A lovely man.

In the World Cup 1966 against France , Stiles seriously injured French midfielder Jacques Simon with a bad late tackle and there were calls from the media and FA for Stiles to be dropped. Ramsey publicly defended Stiles, being sure that the tackle was mistimed rather than malicious.
From the final eleven i think it's just Cohen,Hunt,Bobby Charlton and Hurst that are still with us.

There is a tenuous connection between Nobby Stiles and Sutton United/Gander Green Lane.
Anybody ?

I didn't know Johnny Giles was Nobby Stiles' brother-in-law! You learn something old every day..

His brother in law played against us in the FA Cup ? Correct ! Both players were in the Manchester United side for the FA Cup Semi Final win against Southampton in 1963.Stiles was the only change in the Final, being replaced by Albert Quixall.Sutton United also got to Wembley that year.
