Despite yesterday's dropped points, some of us will be gazing at the National League table and marvelling at how little old Sutton United ("a pub team from Surrey") sit at the summit of non-League football, having won eight of their last ten league games (drawing the other two), our opponents including Wrexham, Chesterfield and Stockport County.
Most of us have supported the club through thick and thin. Twenty years ago our situation was a lot less rosy. Relegated from the Conference after a single season back up, the team was struggling for form in the Ryman League.
I've just been reading my diary entry for Tuesday 20 March 2001. Here are extracts: "went up to Harrow Borough for Sutton's latest defeat...Sutton went down 2-1 (two sloppy goals) - now lost 9 of last 11".
Those trips to Earlsmead do feel as if they belong to another era.

Enjoyed reading AA.
And that’s why you should all smile at every result and every game as we head to the final few furlongs.
You all deserve this.
Brilliant read.

Times have changed, back then you ever believe you would watch Sutton on tablet (?) via a live stream (?).
BTW there were 1800 streaming yesterday 👍🏻

Whilst we’re in nostalgic mood, I watched a rerun of The Big Match with Brian Moore. The featured game was Chelsea v Charlton in Div 2. So do you remember lines of bobbies with tall helmets guarding the terraces? Those little blue cars for the disabled that were lined up next to the pitch? Mud? And, sadly, grounds full of people? 😥

Remember the alphabet letters along side the side of the pitch which corresponded with fixtures listed in the programme for the half time scores?
Also the early evening papers with partial match reports and updates in the stop press?
I’m thinking mid 1960’s.

Listening to the radio coming out the ground trying to catch the full time scores.

Rosette sellers on the side roads leading to the ground - bring them back!

In the 70s, when we played out in East London on a Saturday the supporters' coach would stop in the City on the way home and someone would jump off to buy a bundle of the evening paper with the day's final scores and reports - though I think the match reports were only to half-time.

Bring back rattles! And we should all wear hats we can throw in the air when a goal is scored.

Funny isn't it? 10 seasons ago, we were still at that level (or actually the level below as the Conference North and South had yet to have been invented), where we were still going to Earlsmead (where I believe that season we had a 0-0 draw), but other classic footballing venues such as Vale Farm, The Keith Tuckey stadium, Homelands and Cheriton Road. I can't see us playing league football at any of those anytime soon. Of course it's easy to forget that the captain for that season, but sadly had to retire after getting an injury in a Isthmian League match at Walton Casuals was our terrific assistant manager (and great captain too) Jason Goodliffe!

Wasn't micky the lad who collected tickets in the small wooden stand opposite side of ground to the main stand. Sadly died very young.
