Matt Gray and Jason Goodliffe sign new deals at Sutton United Posted: 07/04/2021
We are delighted to announce that Manager, Matt Gray, and his Assistant, Jason Goodliffe, have both signed new contract extensions at Sutton United.
Club Chairman, Bruce Elliott, enthused: “ We often remarked how taking over from Paul Doswell after eleven years of progress at this club was going to be one of the hardest jobs in Non-League football. After several years’ experience as an Assistant Manager at EFL and National League clubs, we are Matt’s first club as a “number one” and we could not be more thrilled with the job he has done in his first two seasons in the role. He understands what Sutton United is all about, has an extraordinary knowledge of the game and a tremendous work ethic; his superb squad of players and his partnership with Jason and the rest of his Management team have brought results and a brand of football which we can all be very proud of. Long may it continue!”
Matt was equally happy to commit himself to the club: “ I couldn’t be happier at Sutton United. This is a special Football Club full of excellent people. It is a real pleasure working closely with Bruce, AB, Tim and every Board Director and club official, whose hard work and passion for the club is there for all to see, and the togetherness and connection with our fabulous supporters is just terrific. We know they are kicking every ball at home right now and can’t wait to share this journey in person with them all once more. Everyone involved just wants the very best for the club and these are exciting times to be associated with Sutton United. Jason and I are very grateful for the opportunity this club gave to us; we obviously have our targets and ambitions and nothing would make us prouder than to realise those ambitions with Sutton United”

So delighted to read that they have signed these extensions to their contracts. Matt Gray was mentioned in the media quite regularly a little while ago as being on the short list to become a Football League manager elsewhere. He has so grown into the manager role with us. I am so pleased that he is staying whether we are in League 2( or- whisper- the National League) next season.

A no brainer for Matt and Jason, and for the club. Fantastic news for all concerned. And that includes all us supporters.

Great news for the club, well done Matt Gray.He took more than his fair share of criticism during the early days of his tenure but has guided Sutton United to the brink of Football League status which will be a wonderful achievement.
I first watched them play at GGL in 1965 and hope to be there when they run out for their first home game in the league.I'm sure it will be a very emotional time.

Quite frankly, I am over the moon. As billy says, there was a clamour of criticism shortly after his appointment and I was one of very few voices in those early days to support him. In my view, Matt and Jason have more than justified the early hope that I placed in them. Collectively, they have surpassed even my wildest expectations. I have been particularly impressed by Matt's mental fortitude, his focus and his unwavering professionalism. To have exhibited such strong and stable leadership during a global pandemic is particularly remarkable, and whatever happens in the remaining fixtures, this season should go down as an impressive chapter in SUFC's history for many years to come.
I have now changed my profile status from "In Matt We Hope" to "In Matt We Trust". I couldn't have asked for a surer, safer pair of hands on the good ship Sutton's tiller.
