Looking at this technology on the internet why didn’t we put a hybrid grass pitch down and develop the academy outside of the club environs as we have done know. Is it a question of hindsight?
I know the 3G surface would have had to be renewed by 2025 - how long will our new hybrid last or is it immortal with just some periodic reseeding?

The 3G gave us all the benefits I’m sure you’re aware of - all teams on site (cost saving/community advantage) and the ability to generate revenue from rental. I’m certain we’d have kept the 3G model if we could.

The decision to lay 3G was for several reasons, to have a good quality surface that would enable the team to play the fast attacking football we wanted; to not get postponements and maintain the surface quality; to enable altho various sections of the club to be based out of GGL.
Hybrid technology has advanced since 2015, but even now doesn't allow close to the levels of usage that are possible on a 3G. No, the pitch cannot last for ever, the expected lifetime is similar to 3G but there are examples of hybrids lasting well over ten years before needing major refurbishment.

Should we be concerned that the sand substrate isn't exactly flat? This was highlighted very well by yesterday evening's rain which sat in the furrows made by the tractors. Not living in Sutton I have no idea how heavy the rain was. Biblical I hope because it did seem that the drainage system struggled to cope. Can anyone local comment on yesterday's weather?

Not a totally fair test. The sand is exposed to the elements, so when a large amount of water falls on it very quickly it will naturally puddle. Once the membrane and grass are in place they will attenuate the flow. The system works as a whole, not just as parts, and is designed to drain the surface and then take sub-soil water away to the drains asap - in fact there will be times, apparently, when the water drains quicker than would be ideal. The focus of this type of pitch is to develop and protect the root system.
