I saw an article recently in which one of our board members was quoted as saying ‘we’re not little old Sutton anymore’. I know what he meant by this – but I would disagree – and what is more, I’m all the more proud of what has been achieved because we are still little old Sutton United.
It’s less than 3 weeks until the Football League season kicks off and we currently have no pitch and our floodlights, turnstiles and stand for away supporters are yet to be installed. I know that all of these things are being addressed – but we are still a club predominantly run by (exceptional) volunteers. No multi-million-pound training complex for us – but a gym to be installed in the car park and training to take place at the local grammar school.
I think that the magnitude of what the club has achieved may become even more apparent when we enter the FA Cup next season. Last season we lost 1-0 to Bromley – and the result didn’t really attract many headlines. If we were to lose 1-0 to Bromley this season, the headlines would be of ‘non-league giant killers slaying the Football League club’ (headlines that I would imagine would not be overly welcome to Bromley fans). In the first and second rounds of next season’s FA cup we will be a ‘target’ for non-league clubs rather than a ‘scalp hunter’.
I recently saw an interview with Bromley’s manager on Sky Sports News (he was being interviewed because he is a very close friend of Gareth Southgate). He was saying how much extra pressure is being put on him by his board to win promotion this season following Sutton’s success last season. The view of the Bromley Board is that if Sutton can do it, so can they. At this moment in time, I can’t see beyond the likes of (the heavily financially-backed) Stockport or Wrexham (or both) winning promotion from the National League next season – just like the likes of Crawley, Fleetwood, Salford, Forest Green and Harrogate have done in recent times with significant financial backing behind them. However, Sutton have given hope to the more traditional non-league teams that hard-work and commitment may be enough – and I for one hope that other such clubs follow the path that Sutton have taken.

Apologies for the intrusion on here. Local Palace fan in peace. As you know, Palace U21's are visiting your ground on Tuesday next week for the Pizza Trophy game. It is Palace's debut in the competition, having only just gained Cat 1 Academy status.
Whilst I appreciate that Premier League Academy teams are not greatly welcome in the competition by League 1 and League 2 sides, amongst the die hard and anorak Palace fans, there is considerable interest, as it gives our fans a first opportunity to visit both your ground and AFC Wimbledon's new stadiums for (vaguely) competitive matches, and what with them being local fixtures, easy games to get to at ticket prices no doubt a lot cheaper than Prem games.
Anyway, cutting to the chase, Crystal Palace are not greatly communicative at the moment, so it is not clear to Palace fans whether:
- there is segregation at GGL for the match? - if there is segregation, would Palace be selling the away ticket allocation? - or if there is segregation, if Sutton would be selling the away tickets online? - or if no segregation, we all pile in for tickets at 5pm today on the Sutton ticketing site?
Not promising a vast invasion of Palace fans, but there is interest and I reckon a few hundred Palace will attend, so am asking here first before buying tickets in what turns out to be the 'home end'

Anyway, cutting to the chase, The go to place for answers to these questions is tickets@suttonunited.net or if you have any queries you can come to me directly tim.allison@suttonunited.net and I will provide the answers for you. It is anticipated tickets will be made available online at our ticket store later today. In general, we are having to segregate games now, much though we like the non-league tradition of not having to. Sale of away tickets is for discussion between the two clubs (as we are discovering this isn't standard in the EFL). Our preference, but not that of all EFL clubs, is online not physical ticketing. The extent of availability of on the day tickets we sell will be determined by capacity, and how the away club wish to sell, and the likelihood of pre-sales meeting our capacity. We welcome all away fans, wishing to showcase our Club, culture and what makes us special, to as wide an audience as possible. We hope to be increasing our away capacity shortly, and in due course that of the home and and therefore total capacity too.

Thanks Tim. I suspect in the absence of published info, some Palace fans will just buy in the home end if that is what is available online first, particularly if it appears the 2 for 1 ticket offer is only applicable to home fans, hence why I was trying to get the info ahead of you putting yours on sale at 5pm today. Plus there is a bit more freedom to move about in the home sections rather than be penned into the smaller away end.
Appreciate that you don't know the answer at the moment. At least with online ticketing, decisions can be made later in the day by many fans.

It's now 5.20. No tickets on sale and no news about them whatsoever.
Again, if you are going to set a deadline, you either need to stick to it or have a fall back in place (communications).
Second time in 2 days this has happened. In non-league we got away with it. We're a league club now, the demand and the judgement bar is higher.
Again, like yesterday I appreciate that there is still a hell of a lot on, but seriously. One tweet. One facebook post. That's all that's needed. Unless the club is happy to be seen as unreliable.

And for the 2nd day running as soon as I post it, it appears. And the free tickets went straight away. I gave up after waiting 15 minutes only to return when I saw the tweet

And for the 2nd day running as soon as I post it, it appears. I would've missed that if you hadn't mentioned this as I didn't see it tucked up at the right side of the screen. I expected it chronologically at the bottom of the screen. I'm still getting used to the new layout.

Tim, there are a few Sutton fans on Facebook that are having problems buying the tickets online. I have passed on your details, hopefully you will be able to help 🤞

Crystal Palace box office have said via email that they are not aware of any tickets being made available for away fans at this forthcoming fixture, although if it changes then info will be put on the Palace website.
The common approach amongst the Palace fans I spoke to last night at our game at Watford was that with just a week to go they were going to go in the 'home' end anyway, as they had always done where they went in the past at friendly matches between the clubs at GGL.
I believe that at several other grounds when playing in this competition, only one stand is opened and all tickets for all spectators are obtainable through the home club anyway, akin to a reserve fixture. Matches are generally low key and amicable in this competition apparently.

That might no be the case with Pompey fans - I once went with a friend who supported Brentford- the away end was peppered with coins thrown by the home fans - a lot of 50p - picked up a few bruises but picked up enough cash to cover half the cost of my ticket 😂

A bit like Andy K on here, no sooner than I post that, than Palace provide a link to the away booking section of Sutton United's ticket website (so as to be able to select away end tickets).
Someone, somewhere up there is doing something, even if we sometimes have to be mindreaders to know exactly what!
Thank you whoever pulled some strings.
