£20k in the bank, progress to the next round of the EFL but at what cost? Three players off with injuries all from defensive positions. We will wait to see how bad they are but hardly a great preperation for a big FA Cup tie. Is it any wonder that the EFL Trophy gets so much bad press when they schedule rounds before an FA Cup weekend? As ever, the EFL fail to see the bigger picture for their own ends. A crowd of 770 with less than 40 travelling from Stevenage (who can blame the absentees for being so?). While only just a few seasons ago, a midweek, early rounds cup match attracting that sort of gate would have been marvelled at. Not now. Show's how far the club has travelled.
And let's face it, a classic it wasn't. Another strong wind dominated proceedings and it got worse as the match progressed. Perhaps Brad House injured himself trying to get more length in his kicks into the wind in the second half. Neither side coped too well with the conditions. A lot of committed endeavour but little quality on show. And when U's did get the ball down, there was a Stevenage defender ready to stop progress with a number of free-kicks for U's but nothing to cause any real alarm for the visitors.
Of course, it went to penalties and Deano, on for the injured Brad, was the hero of the hour. It looked curtains for U's when Ricky K decided to donate a matchball to the Friends of Collingwood Rec but Dean saved the following pen. Then Tanto had his effort saved but Dean reciprocated. Ben G (according to a scout not the best at playing out from the back!) but he knows how to take a pen and then Dean saved a third consecutive pen. Not sure, I have ever seen a Sutton 'keeper do that and if the world record is four consecutive saves then I probably haven't!.
U's first penalty shoot out success since 05/12/00 when for the secound round running U's got through in the the Full Members Cup on penalties. The victim on that occasion was Croydon. (By some coincidence, it gets a mention in last night's programme). Since then we have lost four. Wingate & F, Bohemians and Slough. Who can remember the other?
We wait to here from Matt or Jason on the squad situation. We also wait to see if Joey Barton will be there to greet them on Saturday.

Didn't we win a penalty shootout in the SSC at Corinthian Casuals a few seasons back? Or did we lose that one?

In true Mainwaring style, yes, I wondered who would spot that first (certainly not me, totally missed it).

In true Mainwaring style, yes, I wondered who would spot that first (certainly not me, totally missed it). That's right, a freezing night (where I think you could actually see the pitch getting whiter as the game went on). I remember the tea bar shut just after the 2nd half started and literally the only hot drink I could get was hot blackcurrant from the bar. Won 4-3 if I remember and youth player Ronnell Dennis scored the winning penalty.

Must have been a poor game when the extended highlights include a slow-mo replay of a throw-in being headed out for a corner

I wonder whether we are at the stage of having to consider bringing in loan signings to cover for injuries? We obviously did this when Brad was injured earlier this season. Of course, if we want to bring anyone in with Saturday in mind, they would need to not be cup-tied - and their parent club's would need to be happy for them to become cup-tied.

Not so easy as an EFL club that has to operate with transfer windows.

Keeper might get an emergency loan. But outfielders may have to dip into the youth if short.

I guess even if released the club may still hold his registration.
