33 years ago today, this happened
Even after all this time and all that's happened between then and now, watching this still makes me well up with emotion.

One thing I remember was it was an early kick off because of our floodlights and there were no pubs open in those days to celebrate.

I'd take that with a big pinch of salt, how was us beating Coventry more likely than Oxford Utd beating Swansea ?

What do mathematicians know about football? I wonder if Wing Commander Charles Reap would have disagreed with you if he were still alive!

Never mind a new centre back, lets sign up one of these maths bods to assist Matt. That should ensure that all upcoming results go our way!!

I wonder if Wing Commander Charles Reap would have disagreed with you if he were still alive! WTF is he? Known as the founder of the long ball, Charles Reep analysed thousands of football matches from a mathematical point of view. He pretty much said that 80% of goals came from 3 or fewer passes. His work was firstly taken on by Stan Cullis at Wolves in the 50s, and was often quoted by Graham Taylor as the reason being Watford's success in the 80s. One of his fundamental principles of the game is that "possession means nothing", which oddly enough many have said on here about us this season. His work was obviously floored and lacked context at times, but he literally invented an entire style of play using mathematics! Here's a bit more about him if you fancy a read www.sportperformanceanalysis.com/article/history-of-performance-analysis-the-controversial-pioneer-charles-reep

Well, he was right about possession.

An approach taken up by Charles Hughes, who I think I am right in saying would have been quite influential in the coaching of Ted Powell, Keith Blunt and Barrie Williams. Barrie certainly talked about POMO (positions of maximum opportunity) but that doesn't mean it was Route One. A bit like Matt, Barrie favoured wide-men and quick, direct forwards. It must have worked because we scored over 100 league goals in both title-winning seasons (84/5 & 85/6) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Hughes_(football_manager)
