I view this evenings quarter-final as a mightily significant night for the club, being just two games from a Wembley appearance.
It got me wondering how our record in cup quarter-finals stands up over the years.. aside from a couple of Surrey Senior Cup q/f’s the ‘only’ other one I’ve experienced during my time supporting the club was the Rushden & Diamonds tie in the FA Trophy in the 99/00 season - even then I only attended the home game missing out on the spectacular win in the replay.

The one I remember is 1993 when we were drawn at home to "lowly" Warrrington Town who at the time were in the NPL or even the NWCL. We only narrowly got through 2-1 (the game before that memorable but ultimately disappointing two legged semi final versus Wycombe). I had no idea at the time that by the end of the same decade, I would wind up living a few hundred yards away from Cantilever Park and who for the last 20 or so years have been my "local team".

In the 1981 FA Trophy, we won 1-0 at Aylesbury in a Q Final replay after drawing 0-0 at home. I must admit that I can't really remember too much about these games. In the home leg of the semi final we beat Bangor City 4-1 and I remember this as being one of the best Sutton performances I have ever seen. Graham Dennis was absolutely superb on the day and scored a fantastic goal from long range.

It got a bit nasty after the game and I was happy to get back to the car relieved that we had avoided any trouble. Then when I took my coat off, I discovered the back was covered in spittle. With all their later problems, I've never been able to feel too sorry for them.

Rushden away in the trophy was one of a handful of highlights that season. What a privilege to visit that stadium and come away with a stunning win. Of course the battering at the hands of an outrageously unsustainable Kingstonian all-stars team of mercenary professionals soured things, but we know how that turned out. Two sides living light years beyond their means.
