I was intrigued by Matts comments after the Carlisle game where he commented on the size of the pitch and the fact it was one of the bigger ones. I being retired, have the time to read a lot of writings about the EFL and also I am member of the NTT20 podcast associated League 2 squad. I saw a posting today which had been gleaned from the Football Stadiums website which seems to contradict what Matt said. According to this, which ranks all 92 clubs by pitch area the largest ground in England is .......Shrewsbury Town! The biggest pitch in League 2 is Leyton Orient. We have the 23rd largest ranked playing surface ...the fourth largest in League 2 after Orient , Port Vale and Hartlepool. Carlisle the 47th biggest pitch. Stevenage the smallest pitch of the 92. What is most amazing is that we have a bigger pitch than virtually all the Premier League, including Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, Anfield, in fact the only pitches bigger than us from the Premier League are Brighton, West Ham Watford and Tottenham. I've always thought that our pitch looks so small , but perhaps that is because the terraces aren't banked and we cant look down form on high and even the small TV gantry doesn't give the same perspective as from the height of the aforementioned "big" teams in the PL.
So in conclusion is part of our success past and present is nothing to do with plastic, but that there is room for wing play and above average fitness and the ability to run the legs of most team on such a big pitch?
