Maybe there was a touch of karma about this result after the somewhat questionable postponement of the fixture from its original date. On tonight's evidence Oldham are a much more dangerous side than Scunthorpe, as they broke with pace down the wings and pumped a succession of crosses into our box. But the final score makes it a bit more likely that it will be the Latics joining the Iron in the drop through the League Two trapdoor.
John Sheridan must be sick of the sight of Matt Gray's Sutton who had thumped his Chesterfield side 4-0 back in September 2019.
This was a gritty away performance from a Sutton side missing nine players, including two added to the injury list since Saturday. (It should be noted that Oldham also had a few out injured.) Congrats to Ricky Korboa on his first two EFL goals for the club. The first was a touch scrappy, but the second was a calm finish after Kenny D had put him through. Kenny then went off for Harry who was on hand to take the penalty after David A was brought down.
As mentioned above, Oldham's late consolation goal denied us a return to 7th place, as we stay below Swindon on goals scored. Bur we're only two points behind Northampton in third.

Great midweek performance tonight, keeps us in the Playoff mix, it does mean we face 7 matches in 28 days 9th - Apr - 7th May.
And yep we are secure for our second season in EFL2..

"Korboa isn't good enough for this level"
Tonight he's the match winner.
Whilst we're all entitled to our opinions, never be arrogant or stupid enough to think you know more than the management team about the ability of any player in our squad. They sign them, they train with them most days and know them and their ability better than any of us ever will.
We also missed out on the goal of the season when Ben G just hit over with a superb overhead kick. Ironically if he didn't go for it, Bennett was there to tap it in.
A solid performance with yet a other threadbare team with a winger playing right back.
Ricky mom for me, especially after his second latching onto a lovely through ball from Kenny with a finish that would have been acceptable to any Premier league striker.
Lovely stuff

Ricky's finish for his second goal was the sort of finish we were seeing regularly from Donovan towards the end of last season. Wouldn't be surprised to see Ricky playing on Saturday as the second striker alongside Richie or Omar. I guess that much depends on who is available.

Great gritty performance from the lads tonight, dug in against a team desperate for points. Ref/Lino were as poor as I’ve come to expect at NL and L2 level. Pen in the first half completely missed/ignored, even their left back expected it to be given as him and Dave both gave up on the ball expecting the ref to point at the spot. MOTM for me was Goodliffe again, even one of their stewards said he’s been our best player, didn’t put a foot wrong and won every ball that came his way. Special mention to Korboa who ran his socks off and scored 2, think he deserves a go up top again Saturday with the current injuries. 3 points couldn’t ask for more from the lads.

Also worth a mention is that we finished this game with the 41 year-old Craig Dundas partnering the 18 year-old Kylian Kouassi in attack. It's another indication of how stretched our resources currently are, but I wonder if that has set an EFL record for an age gap between front men!

Very calm finish from Korboa who had his best game in Sutton's colours. I think we lost a bit of bite in midfield when Kenny came off as he and Ben were my joint men of the match.

A long but enjoyable midweek trip up north and thanks to the kind soul who drove for putting up with me and also enduring what was a home journey of lane and junction closures and subsequent diversions on the m6 and m25; sat nav well over employed.
Two depleted squads matching up in very mild conditions. No wind of any note either, thus, other than the sloping Boundary park pitch, a level playing field. A nice change.
More casulaties on the player front before the start but the lads responded well after the home side started brightly but with little quality. Ricky K's first EFL goal for U's may have been fortunate but his second was both brilliant and simple. Kenny D's control and well weighted pass and Ricky's composure and finish putting U's in a good position early in the second half. David A's pace won a pen which Harry B converted. Just as well as a late rally from the hosts saw them put in a few decent crosses from the right one of which was headed in by the appropriately named, Sutton.
Another fine team performance that had, until the Oldham goal, pushed U's back into the play-off positions. The table looks ridiculous from 2nd to tenth and Salford could add to the shake up too. Almost half the division still in the promotion hunt and that includes, U's. A fantastic effort and mathematical confirmation of a second EFL season for 2022/23.
Great to see Ricky K on the scoresheet and he took his chance to shine. Enzio B was excellent in an unfamilair role (to him) at right back and the midfield two of Adam L and Kenny D and later Harry B made life difficult for the hosts. I thought David A had a terrific second half. Both sides seemed to struggle with the slope, the ball running out of play on a frequent basis. Ben G was close to scoring a goal of the season contender; not many centre-backs would try that overhead although it probably robbed Richie B of a goal.
As for the ref. We have seen worse but blimey he and his assistant missed a blatant handball in the first half and considering the pen award against Joe K at Walsall, Omar B was twice the victim of strong enough illegal challenges to warrant a penalty kick. He finally pointed to the spot in the second though and did let the game flow, although his constant gripeing at Deano over the time it took to retrieve the ball after it had gone out of play was ridiculous.
As for Oldham. I thought the ground was great. A mix of the old and comparitively new. The away end was big and swallowed up the 62 U's fans. Small on numbers but loud in voice. The home support kept going throughout; didn't resort to the "your support is...." rubbish and at one point displayed some gallows humour. Their very young side - they all looked about 18 - never gave up and didn't resort to tough stuff when the match was out of their reach. However, I fear for their near future and perhaps even long term should they go down (and that looks more than likely). On the evidence of last night their fans don't deserve to see their great club in the state it is and I would compare it to how U's fans felt towards the end of the 2007/8 season. Whether they can use it as a platform to greater things as SUFC did/has is another question.
A first trip to Port Vale next. As tough as they come I expect.

Fair play to korboa. He was exceptionally poor at Walsall and may not have got another chance after that if more players were fit. He's taken his second chance with both hands but remains to be seen if he can do it against good quality oppo, which oldham most certainly were not.
We'll probably find out in a few short days as I imagine he'll start against a strong port vale team. Can't imagine any of our first choice players carrying knocks will be risked ahead of the big one!
