Does not Matt say one game at a time, or in this case one occurrence at a time. Let us play at Wembley and enjoy the occasion, if we win so well and good and if we don’t so be it but at least it will stay in our memories along with beating Hartlepool and arriving where we are now. After Wembley we play Leyton Orient, we have a week to recover and concentrate on obtaining 75 points. What will be will be so let’s just enjoy everything that happens from here on in and in May look back and say what a season this has been.

Whatever, it is, domestically, the biggest cup final the club will have played in. I agree. Is your use of domestically suggesting you would say the Anglo Italian trumps it? No, it means I am having difficulty finding any comparison for it. When considering the circumstances of U's season at the time, as an achievement, it was rather unexpected though.

I kind of understand the comparison with the SSC in relative terms of the competitions we currently take part in, but in absolute terms there is no comparison at all. Firstly think of the other clubs taking part. Historically we have always been one of the biggest clubs in Surrey (and when I say Surrey I mean under the jurisdiction of Surrey FA, not geographically). In the PJT, although the highest ranked teams in the country don't take part (their clubs may do, but the first teams don't) each game against a club like Wigan or Portsmouth or Rotherham is in itself a huge stand alone occasion, no matter what the competition. Secondly, the fact that we've sold in excess of 12,000 tickets to makes this game a big one no matter what because that's a huge deal for the club. The financial rewards, the TV exposure, the media attention - we can't underestimate how important those are for the club and IMO that blows any equivalence out of the water. It's just different.
Oh and thanks for your kind words davep although I'm not sure "young lady" is an appropriate way to refer to someone in her forties!

I'm just sitting back and enjoying it! Sunday will be a fantastic experience and then we have 7 more cup finals as we push towards the finish line.
Whatever happens - it's been ANOTHER heck of a season. We're very lucky!

But league one is a different beast. It's very difficult for teams to compete these days higher up the pyramid with the old Cambridge / Wimbledon kind of philosophy. Direct football is far less effective as you rise. We'd most likely go up with the majority of the same squad and we'd almost certainly come straight down, and quite possibly weakened financially and with the morale of a losing team. Technically, the Wigan players were on another planet. We'll see it again next week, and yes we can compete in a one off game but the passing and touch of players in league 1 is far more advanced than league 2. From afar League One looks a very ‘2 division’ league. The top half decent, the bottom not much different to league 2. We’d have a good scrap having a go at staying up imo. Wimbledon have barely won a point for months and still have a chance of staying up. I find it odd you think Wigan were on another planet when we knocked them out and they hardly caused a whole host of problems for our defence. We’ve obviously beaten a first team squad of Portsmouth and Wimbledon this season, competed well with Cardiff of the Championship and even with bare bones generally aren’t beaten too convincingly in League 2 against the better sides. That’s a lot of one offs. Think you do us a disservice tbh. As to philosophy maybe if it’s gone out of fashion it’s a reason why it’s so effective now? We’re not an easy game for anyone. I said wigan's technical ability, ie their touch and passing, was on another planet to ours. If you didn't see that then you were watching a different game because they were pinging 40 yard passes around all night and I saw almost no poor touches. Doesn't mean they outplayed us because they didn't, just that their players have far higher technical ability. So will Rotherham's. One off games, especially the early rounds of the league trophy, are not fair comparison to 46 league games. Be careful what you wish for if you are really that keen on another step up so soon. Wembley final and upper mid /fringes of play off is near perfection for sutton this season. Like I said, direct football becomes less effective further up the pyramid. Modern players, tactics, pitches, scouting etc mean we are unlikely to see direct teams thrive at the highest level again. To compete in L1 we would require 5 or 6 more technically able players which the club can't afford. We need the infrastructure first. Staying in L2 we can keep most of the current side together and concentrate on improving off the field rather than inflated wages.

I think there’ll always be different styles and would think you’d likely still find fairly direct sides in the PL. But I don’t follow closely enough to know. In recent times Lincoln went up from L2 with that reputation and have done ok. Am sure there will be others.
If our outside hope of going up comes off I’ll certainly be celebrating and looking forward to watching us take on L1, not worrying about what might go wrong. The biggest thing for me would be guaranteeing 3 seasons as a league club which is huge. Many would have said the same things about us on promotion to L2. That said I do understand concerns re. too much too soon and quite frankly am still finding being a league club for just 1 season (and now at least 2 seasons) pretty surreal. Of course over the moon with the season no matter what happens from here.
Time for me to park league status and look forward to the final!! 5 day countdown, can’t wait.
