As a former resident of Harlow (although we are talking 25 years ago ), I'll share with you my advice on the local beer-drinking opportunities. Like most new towns, Harlow is not great for pubs. Those built as part of the sixties expansion are named after butterflies and moths (Red Admiral, Willow Beauty etc) and in the main are best avoided. The better pubs are those in the old village centres (such as the Three Horseshoes and the Cock in Great Parndon) that were absorbed into the new town. Harlow does have one entry in the Good Beer Guide and it's a Wetherspoon's - the William Aylmer in Kitson Way on the edge of the town centre. You know what to expect! The best pub in the area is the Queen's Head in Churchgate Street, a village just to the east of Harlow (and about 25 minutes' walk from Harlow Mill station). This is a a world away from the charmless concrete - a 16th century building complete with wooden beams, ales from local micro-breweries and an enterprising menu. Unfortunately it's the opposite side of town from Harlow FC - but this won't be a problem if you have a car. And there are buses. Naturally, I'll walk it (probably via the William Aylmer). ;D

Having been a more recent resident and run the team who played at the Greyhound Stadium which is next to the new ground I would recomend the following.... Dont bother with Harlow....all the decent pubs of which there are only a couple are all a fair distance from the new ground which is right on the edge of town... Personally i would go past the ground for a short trip to Roydon which has a couple of classic old style pubs which serve some decent Ale....and you may bump into Ray Winstone as this is where he drinks...

Harlow sounds crap. We're going to chance Roydon (as it's the stop before Harlow on the train) and see what it's like.

Roydon sounds like a pretty sound idea. The walk's about the same to Harlow's gaff and there appears to be a couple of pubs that claim to sell ale although after my adventures with Hercule Stout earlier this evening just getting up in time will be a fine achievement!

I ended up in Saffron Walden after the game. The pubs there were marvellous!

Roydon wasn't half bad. Pleasant little villagey type place. Couple of nice pubs although the White Hart was the better of the two. Crusader had a previously unknown beer on, the name of which completely escapes me. Nick might remember it though.
