Same result as the last home match but a more convincing performance if still not at our best.
We didn't seem to be at the races for the first half hour but our wingers came more into the game and we exerted greater authority in midfield. The penalty was obviously the game changer, aided by the sending off later. Their 'keeper was by some way the busier of the two and I can't recall Rose being ever really stretched.
Good to see Ali and Harry back - I thought they both acquitted themselves well after their lengthy lay-offs. Colchester didn't help themselves with niggly fouls and a few incidents of "handbags" raised the temperature a little as a few players struggled with their footholds in the closing minutes.

Well it was a win and a welcome three points, but it was another uninspiring performance and closer than it ought to have been. Freezing cold and I can’t ever recall a 3pm kick off finishing at 510pm before. Obviously a 9-10m delay before Milsom could take the penalty (expertly put away) whilst Judge was treated and stretchered off, but why was the half time break 19m long?
Good to see Smith and Beautyman back, but strengthening is needed in January.

Enzo absolutely bossed his man today, so much so the 22 got switched to our left just before the handbags, which the referee got spot on. At this rate he'll have to keep his place when we have another CB available, probably at right wing for Josh who is really low on confidence and not working hard enough for the team.
Strange first half. Colchester threatened every time they got wide but for some reason their players decided to throw away the iniative with a series of stupid tackles. Cast iron second yellow which the ref bottled, but the next time one of their booked players made a cynical sythe there was never going to be a repeat. Ref missed a shocking tackle from easty in the first few mins which should have been a yellow, and I think he gave the pen on the balance of the first infringement from the cross which looked stonewall. Need to see the highlights, no idea how judge got hurt but looked like a high foot for the pen.
Second half however I thought the ref and our players were excellent, but at 1-0 it was always a bit nervy. Really should have killed the game off but their keeper made one of the best saves I've seen at Ggl to keep out smith's shot destined for the top corner. Smith showing exactly what we've been lacking ie composure in and around the box.
Still, our 14 shots 7 on target with 6 saves to colchesters 7 and none on target shows why they are struggling Clearly they can play going forward but some of those tackles on a yellow were absolutely mindless and they deserved nothing from the game.

One thing that stays with me from that match is how Colchester almost specifically set about losing the game through their stupid (as baboonfish observed) tackling. Fair chance they would have lost, anyway, but that was the hill they chose to die on.
Weird approach.

Slow start but we exerted control and started threatening from half way through the first half. They can have no complaints, should have had their centre half off first half. Rose not tested, whereas their keeper had some work. They’re going to have to strengthen to stay up.
Great to see Smith back and he showed a lot of what we have missed. Excellent return to the starting eleven.

A ropey first-half, both clubs showing why they are in the lower reaches of the league table.
We were better in the second-half, and had a number of shots on target, but as we had a man advantage that should have been accepted as a given and we could still not kill the game off.
Harry immediately back on it, and with the return of Ali Smith we can only hope that this turns the tide on our season.
I’m still not happy with our attacking play and accompanying lack of goals.

Unlike England this evening, we edged a tight game. Big three points, and this is the sort of ground-out win that's going to keep us in League Two.
Colchester started the brighter, but, like us, find it difficult to convert pressure into goals. They weren't helped by injuries during the game, and I hope that Alan Judge makes a good recovery after that penalty-area incident that saw him given gas and air before being stretchered off. After a long delay, Rob Milsom put away the penalty awarded for a foul during the same scrimmage.
And in the end that was the difference between the two sides (a Milsom penalty having also secured the home win against Rochdale three weeks ago). The second yellow for their player clearly helped us, but their keeper kept them in the game with a succession of saves. Thankfully we again saw out the final ten minutes without conceding.
Decent 70 minutes for Ali today and it was then great to see Harry back in action.
We nudge up one place to 16th.

I think that we might see quite a lot of activity one way or another in January - particularly given that some players are starting to come back from injury. Will Adam be sent out on loan again now that Ali and Harry are back? I can't recall whether Kwame is injured or out of favour? If he is/has been injured, he might benefit from some game time out on loan somewhere else when fit. I'm not sure that any of the parties can be too happy with the Charley Kendall loan situation - I imagine that both the player and Lincoln envisaged him having more game time than has been the case to date. In spite of the lack of goals from our other strikers, he still appears to be 5th choice. Luke seems to have had more game time for Malta lately than he has had for us - so maybe he is another who might benefit from a loan elsewhere? Although they have both had some game time, I think Matt originally envisaged both Tope and Kylian going out on loan - maybe that might still be an option - but we would probably need to bring one or two strikers in - on loan or otherwise. Enormous thanks/credit to Enzio for the way he has filled the gap at right back - but I do look forward to us being able to field 4 defenders in our back four - allowing Enzio to return to competing for a place on the wing.

I think you may be expecting too much. I think a lot of the movement won't happen. I expect Matt will be looking at 3 positions in particular. RB, a winger and a striker. As we have a "full squad" these players will either have to be U21 or we have to offload others. With the money we have at our disposal it could be both. We could loan players in our 22 out, but it would have to be for the rest of the season. I expect some players wouldn't be too keen on that. But back to the subject in hand. Not a vintage by any means. And not for the first time this season we've failed to take advantage of a team with ten men (whilst when the shoe has been on the other foot it "changes the game). But we seem to have got better at seeing the game out and better at having shots. And as others have stated, having Ali and Harry back plays a large part in that. 3 points is 3 points. Regardless of how we get them. I'm certainly happier tonight that Sutton won and England lost than I would have been if it was the other way round.

An edgy start yesterday which is understandable considering the conditions. I thought Colchester were very poor and their goalkeeper kept them in the game..
I agree with Andy that we should be looking at at a striker, right back and a winger. Expecting some of our squad to find other clubs in the January window not necessarily on loan.

Talking of penalties, does anyone now what Rob's record is with us...over 90% conversion rate?

Why would we bring in a right back when enzio has proved so capable? Our man of the match by a mile yesterday and probably against Wimbledon too. A Centre half on a short term deal would be more useful, but I guess Pierre was supposed to be that. Perhaps he was hiding more injury problems and came here to pick up a wage, who knows. Honestly I'd rather we get one decent striker than 2 or 3 squad players to warm the bench. Keep tope as an impact player but we need to get Thomas and Gambin off the wage bill and anyone who thinks Kendall should get a look in again didn't see his feeble display against afc. He'll make up the numbers on the bench until his loan expires unless we have another injury crisis. However, I doubt the club will spend any money when we're looking like we'll have enough about us to stay up without a goalscorer, so I expect minimal movement in and out. In the summer perhaps.

I would say that maybe Enzio could do the job but i find it very frustrating that he has one good week then one bad week. No consistency in any position he has played.
