Congratulations to Easty on his 350th appearance for the club. Undoubtedly one of Sutton United's best ever signings.

As others have said, a superb and complete performance today all round.
Will getting back to his best after being on the sidelines, Eastie great in the middle on his 350th app, defence looking solid with Ben back in there. I said on the Gillingham thread, we need to take more shots from outside the box, Smith can hit them. All infront of the clubs largest ever league crowd.
If there is a critism, is that we didn't score more.

I'd also say that the convincing manner in which we saw the game out in the last 20 mins, via a very unforced and adaptable combination of attack, defence and game management was a great improvement.

Rendell definitely man of the match, but all the lads played well. Let's hope we don't lose any players this Jan.

Those first 25 minutes of the game we were electric and could easily have had 4 goals. More of the same please at Tranmere next Saturday. Certainly the biggest league crowd at Sutton that i can recall & to beat our nearest rivals was fantastic!

This was a more open game than I expected and good entertainment for the capacity crowd (announced as 5,049). As has been mentioned, Matt was able to start with what was probably his strongest XI, and it showed, although we should have been more than 1-0 up after a dominant first half-hour. The visitors equalised from just about their first decent opportunity as we failed to clear Chislett's whipped free kick (the award of which looked rather soft), but Omar grabbed the winner following our own fk in the second half.
Our formation was disrupted when Ben Goodiffe went off, with Joe moving across to CB and Enzio back to RB, but we held on and even came close to snatching a third in the six minutes of stoppage time.
All in all a very satisfying start to 2023. We've now won three on the spin, are up to 12th, have achieved a double over local rivals, and that revenue-boosting crowd has lifted our average home attendance to 3,049 (higher than four other League Two clubs).

Over the festive period, we've arguably gone from being a club looking over its shoulder at Gillingham and Rochdale to a club with a realistic chance of making the play offs. Last season, Bristol Rovers moved from a side potentially facing relegation to a side winning promotion on the back of a very good January transfer window. With 6 points currently separating Carlisle in 4th and Tranmere in 15th, play off places this season could be determined by the business that clubs do in the current window. We have made a great start by bringing David back. We also have players like Ben returning to fitness who feel like new signings. On the down-side, we anticipate that we won’t have much money with which to compete with our rivals for new signings. We also have players that we signed in the last window who don’t appear to have worked out for one reason or another who we would presumably need to move on before we could bring others in – and this may not be easy to do (Dos was always very good at doing this). In spite of our brilliant results and form over Xmas, we’re still missing chances (although great to see Omar on target yesterday) – and with this in mind, a striker appears as if it should be our priority (I’d like to think that we can cover full back positions with what we have). While we may not be able to afford to bring in a striker with a proven track record of scoring at this level, I doubt that Tanto cost us that much when we took him on loan - and there must be similar young players out there - including with Premier League Clubs - who surely would benefit from a loan spell with an EFL club?

This is a post from their forum:
"It’s certainly annoying to be beaten twice in a season by a Mickey Mouse side like Sutton (who I really see as a non league side who have just temporarily got lucky). I do agree that our play isn’t very entertaining at times, but realistically I think that our budget is such that if we try to play entertaining and expansive football with the players we can afford then we will struggle for results. I think that, as we are set up, we can potentially choose 2 of: being reasonably successful in results terms, playing entertaining football or staying within budget, but not all 3."
There's a few more crackers on there like the chap that drove up from Weymouth. Perhaps go and watch your local club instead!

Anyway onto the game. What a great advert it was in front of our biggest league crowd in my lifetime. We were superb with some beautiful one touch football. Need to be more clinical in front of goal but boy was that a joy to watch.
Randall was absolutely outstanding from the first minute to last. Should have had 3. I'll give him 9.5 out of 10 but all the players were superb. Apparently our subs were very ordinary according to one Womble. They were watching a different game to me.
Can't wait for Tranmere.

"...I really see as a non league side who have just temporarily got lucky" - Wow, imagine a team getting lucky over a 46 game season enjoying a fortunate promotion and then and then for that luck to just continue over the next season and a half!! Also when their player was trying to stop Jack Rose lining up his wall at a free kick. What was all that about? A bit pathetic IMO.

Also when their player was trying to stop Jack Rose lining up his wall at a free kick. What was all that about? A bit pathetic IMO. To be fair the majority of posts on their message board said Sutton were far the better side and could have won by a bigger margin. Here are two positive posts…. Why are Sutton a Mickey Mouse team? Just because they spent most of their existence in non-league? They are a good L2 team and the only reason they're not higher is because of numerous injuries earlier on in the season. From what I heard/saw on iFollow, they were the better team. Don't belittle them.
Agree with Meadow, let's not be disrespectful to a well drilled football team and club, played cricket for 3 season late 80s with their supporters, some now on the board ,proper football people, give the respect due..

Apart from their moaning about us and how injuries affect them and how JJ ain’t doing his job they also say. What we need is a manager like Matt Gray as his players know what is expected of them and how well they are drilled, something like that any way. This speaks volumes for Matt and his managerial skills and shows how lucky we really are to have him, and also what a virtually complete fully fit squad can do working in cohesion.

Congratulations to Easty on his 350th appearance for the club. Undoubtedly one of Sutton United's best ever signings. Without question one of the club’s best ever players. Incredibly privileged and lucky to have him throughout the prime of his career. Long may it continue. I actually think he’s personally having his best season yet to date.
