I agree with that Wimbledon fan. We were a non-league side who got lucky.
Lucky enough to end up with a fantastic chairman and board, who have appointed some brilliant managers and staff, running the club on a shoestring yet somehow managing to put together what it takes to compete as an EFL club that's earned its rightful place there.

Football fans of any colour aren't exactly renowned for our impartiality, logic or critical thinking. I mean, according to some of our own lot South London is wonderful despite both Bromley and Wimbledon (two very nice parts of South London, if you ask me) being full of s**t 😂

This season's matches sort of mirror the last time the two clubs met in the league. That was 63/4 when U's won both league matches but lost a South of Thames Cup tie. U's IL win at the old Plough Lane was by 5-0 while their STC loss was by 5-0 (we won the FL" match at Wimbledon by the same score that we lost the PJT tie). The IL home win was by a one goal margin too.
The attendance for that home match was recorded as 4,500 and only surpassed since for a league match by yesterday's attendance. While this was undoubtedly the first sell out league match at GGL, can't say for sure it was a record for a league match, although I would have to really plough through match reports going back decades to confirm.
As for my take on things, this was like we were last season and as has others have said is no coincidence as we get players back. This gives us more depth on the bench and I thought all used had a positive impact. Rob Milsom's availability meant that when Ben G's time was up, Matt was able to manouvere the back four around asEnzio could slip back into right back, something he couldn't do against Gillingham. Aaron P was unavailable anyway.
With the likes of Coby Rowe and Adam Lovatt who both did great work when called upon to come back plus the luckless Sam Hart, the squad is once again looking strong. The return of David will give Matt the best of selection headaches rather than the ones he experienced earlier in the season.
A great way to start 2023 and onto Tranmere for another tough L2 fixture as we begin the second half of the season with one of a host of trips oop north.

The match might officially have been a sellout but there were still quite a few “no shows”. I’d guess there were something like 30 unoccupied seats in the away end, and there were at least eight empty seats in my side of the main stand too.

I was wondering if 5,049 was tickets sold rather than clicks through the turnstile. And whether the gaps in the away seats were where fans had just moved to the standing area
Whatever the reason and number, great to be a part of it and great to see it full (whatever the definition of full is!)

That was cracking wasn't it? By far our best performance of the season, and aside from the keeper, the other 10 players on the pitch played for us last season, all of whom featured in more than half of the league games each. The one who played the least number of games (and the least number of minutes) last season from the starting XI was the scorer of our first with a typical goal for him, giving him a tally of 6 (2 more than the whole of last season already) and was back to his best after a few slightly off colour performances. But in all honesty, picking a standout player from yesterday would be a hard choice - so many had great games like Eastmond and Omar, who are really in top form at the moment, Ali Smith who had his best game since coming back from injury, and Jack Rose who pulled off a couple of great saves too.
Whilst we've seen flashes of it in the last couple of wins, this match really felt like last season. The first half an hour was breathtaking but really the whole 90 mins was a top perfomance by a top side. Looking back at September to November, I can't overstate enough what a decent job the management have done in stemming the flow in very difficult circumstances. Going on that performance, if you want a negative then it's probably fair to say that the summer recruitment was probably a short term let down, but with the very heavy caveat of limited funds and the focus being on signing for the future. One could also argue that last season, the January window dealings (no signings and releasing Tobi Sho Silva) probably bit us on the bum in March and ended up with us ending up just shy of a play off place, but with this season and no one bar the top two really pulling a set of results together, it's going to be much tighter in thos places of 4th to 12th and even lower, and a team that finishs with 76 points this year will probably be in an automatic spot, and play offs could be as low as 68/70 points.
We've got 21 games left and we're halfway to that point. 1.67 points per game from here on out will probably get us into the play offs. 1.95 points per game will get us to same total as last season. That's basically win 12 games will get us in a play off spot and and 14 will give us promotion. 10 home games left and 9 away games. We start winning more on the road, then this can easily become realistic. 7 of our remaining 9 games away are at sides with worse than average home records, including 4 out of the bottom 5. We also have no cup distractions either. This isn't impossible, but really ending up in the top half of the division with what we've gone through could be objectively a bigger achievement than last season.

A sizeable portion of the crowd ignore seat numbers and just stand with mates. Prevalent at Wembley and AFC where we had much larger numbers of people than seats in places, leaving other areas with empty seats.

Hi Andy. I think that you'll find that we have 11 away games left rather than 9.

According to one of the local papers, Sutton's record home attendance to January 1950 was 5,020. Unless some of the local league derbies with Tooting or Carshalton thereafter beat that which is unlikely though not impossible, NYD's gate is probably a record league one for GGL.

Unless it was between 1950 & 1958 when i first started to follow them then i'm sure you are correct. I think Carshalton were in a different league during those years so its unlikely to be them.

Can you hear the sound of someone asking how the crowd was counted?
No, neither can I. Good, isn't it?
