Many of you especially those who stand on the Rec side of the ground will fondly remember my fabulous Dad and long term Us supporter Brian Mason who I’m so sad to report passed away this morning.
Brian was 92 and although ill health had kept him away from GGL in recent years was literally a lifelong supporter. His Dad - who had been a fan since the mid 1920s - took him to his first game at SUFC in 1934 and right up to two or three years ago he was a very regular member of the crowd. He took me to my first game at the Lane in 1967 and I too have been a fan and ST holder ever since. He took me to the first Leeds FA cup game and together we watched the thrilling win against Coventry and all the ups and downs we all experienced. Having regularly watched us in front of 3-400 in the Isthmian League days he was so thrilled about the success of the latest group of players. As recently as yesterday we spoke about letting the 95th minute goal in at Walsall.
His favourite team was that of the late 80s, McKinnon, Rogers, Barnes and Mark Golley his favourite players. No bad judge eh? The club is in our family’s blood and has been for 100 years. Forever Amber, Brian was irreplaceable and unforgettable.
