Question. Who will be in the squad next season and who would you have in or out? As been said in other threads changes may have to be made.

A little disrespectful as there are still 2 games left this season. I’m sure Matt will update after the Carlisle game.

I wouldn't want to name names but what I'm looking for is 2 or 3 new bodies who can immediately challenge the positions of those already in the squad. Of course this means that the current encumbents will have to accept their fate of being sidelined. I think last close seasons newbies failed to impress or keep their initial promise so I'm sure Matt will not want to repeat that.
I did think that Lee Angol fitted the bill of being an improvement in the winter window but he isn't exactly getting much game time.

I think Harry Kane might fancy a season at GGL after today’s result for Tottenham

A big question for me is which part of the season do you judge the squad on? It's a complex and, in some respects, contradictory picture.
Pragmatically speaking, however, when you consider where we're finishing up, the squad has to be considered to have been a successful one. Fundamentally the job is to stay in the league and avoid too much bumping around near the wrong end of the table. Which they've done. Yes, we'll need freshening up and we have, at this stage, been worked-out by the opposition. But that's true of most other teams in the league.

For me we have a sound defence with good cover. Midfield is in need of extra creativity and has an ageing issue. Up front needs work - the last prolific goal scorer was most probably Dan Fitchett even though we have had some good players who haven’t been 15+ goals a season men (Biamou, Deacon, Wright, Omar) although I may well be corrected on that.
Squad depth is not strong overall. I’ve said elsewhere on this forum that last summer’s recruitment was mainly miss with a couple of hits. This close season needs to have a better intake.
Last season I was concerned that we would lose a couple of our bigger players. Not so worried this time round.
With our budget just to stay in League 2 is a major achievement. Success brings with it expectations, especially from recently fledged supporters. Goes with the territory.

The problem with squad depth is the budget. OK, that's fairly obvious, I'm sure. But let me put it this way. If I'm running this and I know that a roughly equal proportion of wins, draws and loses will keep us comfortably in this league then my best bet (given the small budget) is to put my money into a strong 13, who can do the business, and for the rest of the squad take some chances.
OK, if some of my main players are out injured I may ship some loses due to lack of strenght in depth. But, overall, this is my best strategy.
That's just a theory, of course. Very happy to have it contradicted.

For me the positions that will need particular attention are centre midfield, the wide midfield positions and still much room for improvement forward wise. Not entirely sure on the contractual position but Smith, Bugiel and Randall are ones I’d be hoping we can retain over and above ones already confirmed. Presume/hope Rose was signed for 2 years. Don’t think we’ll have much hope of signing Ajiboye. Dennis will likely go back. That’s 2 spots. We still have the unknown of Kasimu, maybe we have the answer upfront already!!

Add Neufville to return to his parent club too. After briefly looking good early on he’s become increasingly peripheral (partly through injury) and I’d be disappointed to see him at GGL next season.

Guess he has age on his side and is exactly the sort of player profile we need to develop and turn into a league player. Lots of room for improvement and does have talent. Injuries certainly haven’t helped. You’d think Luton will release him given where they are - he’s certainly not ready for Championship/PL. The only reason they’d contract him would be to loan and look for a sale.

It depends on if Neufville and Ajiboye leave us or sign on for another loan. I would be happy to see both extend or sign but that might not happen. A lot has been said about Ajiboye but whether he is good enough for league 1 is one thing but he does fit into our team well and is usually a handful for defenders. And Neufville did not have the best run in, first with our depleted squad struggling and then his own injury. But he has at times shown good quality.
We will also likely lose Dennis. I imagine with many of our forwards not being deemed good enough and sent out on loan Matt will have lots to think about regarding our attackers. Hard to predict really as there is a lot to unfold.
