2 things that stand out tonight. Angol is not a target man & Harry B is not a winger !

A bit flat today but I think that's Gillingham being very solid and no surprise their 3rd 1-0 in a row. All Three games we have faced against them have been rubbish matches to watch. Besides their goal which was not the best defending from us, the game was fairly even and perhaps we could have pinched a draw on another night. Lads worked their arses off so cant fault them there. Gillingham will certainly be up there or thereabouts and will no doubt spend in January too.
As for their fans, what a bunch of morons probably getting us a fine for throwing that smoke on the pitch. surely there needs to be something done about away fans doing it as well? as they can simply attack us by getting us fines. Being rowdy is one thing but directly inflicting fines on us is unacceptable.

Can’t afford at this level to be giving teams a head start, especially one as solid as Gillingham. Think they’re a better version of last season’s Stevenage and will go up. Deserved their win. We tried our best but relied entirely on set piece or knock downs and it didn’t fall. Onto the next. Shocking re. the time added and now no one knows where we stand. Thought the ref generally gave us very little. Our defenders particularly took a battering in the air I thought. I'll need to watch the highlights but it looked like it was an error by Sowunmi which led to their goal. If so we seem to be shooting ourselves in the foot with the John/Arnold mixup v Cambridge and, arguably, Smith's stupidity at Barrow. Four matches played and no clean sheets yet. This evening, it took us a while to get going but rallied in the second half. However, we lacked the physical presence or guile to break down the Gills well-marshalled defence. As has been said, Beautyman was wasted wide on the left but I suppose that was a case of needs must. On a positive note, a word for Milsom who worked tirelessly. Worryingly, after such a bright start to the season, the performance bore echoes of our poor patches in the previous campaign: giving away possession too easily, hopeful punts up the pitch in the direction of the smallest player on the pitch and lack of quality in front of goal. Re time wasting/added time, why did the Gills players need a round of drinks with just 11 minutes gone?

We weren't quite at it this evening, against a well organised Gillingham side. Our passing needed to be more precise, and we needed to be picking up more second balls.
I thought Harry B was one of our better performers in this game, even though pushed out to the left again, as the Craigs C and E started in the centre of midfield, Omari Patrick switching from left to right. The balance didn't seem quite right.
The first goal we conceded on Saturday followed us losing the ball out near the touchline, and something similar happened tonight, Omar Sowunmi inadvertently setting up a swift attack down our left, Nichols crossing for his former Crawley strike partner Nadesan to finish. Yes, that's the player speculatively 'linked' with us a few weeks ago. 🙄
We had our spells of pressure, largely from high balls into their box, and they cleared a couple of efforts off the line. Their ex-player Kashket had a goal chalked off for offside. But we twice came close to gifting them a second with some lax defending late in the first half.
That opening day romp against Notts County is starting to look like a freak result. We're down to 16th in the table. And our next opponents, AFC Wimbledon, won away this evening.

Gillingham brought 1,300 fans, I believe? They brought a lot last season, too. Am I supposed to assume that every single one of that number has to be a nice person in order to think that a large and vocal travelling fan base is a good thing?

I thought we played well tonight after a slow start, the difference between the teams was defensively, we made 2 or 3 big errors at the back and was lucky only to be punished the once. They didn't really make any, and its not hard to see why they have 3 clean sheets in row.
As for flares, its not the 1st time they have been smuggled into the ground, the club needs to up its vigilance, and the offender found and punished.
After 3 matches, I will be honest and say we are a far better team than I thought we would be at this stage, and decent season looks quite attainable.

We lost by one goal (a defensive error) against a team shaping early to be a Top 3 club, having battled hard against them and putting them under serious pressure for long periods of the game. No way was the Notts Co. result a fluke. We look like a capable and highly motivated team.
Critical takeaways; I agree with Del, Angol is not a target man. Harry B's passing was erratic. Patrick wasn't the force in the game that he can be.
And it would seem there really is no such thing as a correct amount of extra time. It's like Baby Bear's porridge got left out of the story.

I’m suprised it has taken fans this long to notice that Angol is a target man.
I didn’t go last night but did he win any headers
Need to play to his feet but not sure that will happen.

He won very few headers as you say.Without Smith up front we need to play to his feet and bring the wide men into play.I think if we had played all night we wouldn't have scored. We have a much better team than last season and i am very optimistic that we can achieve at least a play off place if we can keep 11 players on the pitch.

Well that felt like last season didn't it?
A pretty flat performance and I lost count of how many balls we gave away. To be fair though, I can't imagine anyone would have thought it would be full of energy and vibrancy after Saturday. We didn't get a point because of one defensive error (and this wasn't one defenders fault either). I thought Gills looked fitter and better organised than us, but we will get games this season where this is the case.
Still already in a better position than we were this time last year, with a positive goal difference too. Our first game so far this season too where we failed to score. Still plenty to be positive about.

Still plenty to be positive about. Agree with the positive outlook. We were definitely worth a point. Shame it came down to one individual error. I was standing right in front of it and it was a terrible error from sowumni and unfortunately it was his and his alone. Ruthlessly punished, and to be fair he had an excellent game after that. Matts worked wonders in the transfer market but playing Harry on the left is not the answer. We should have a plan b with a 3 man midfield rather than sticking square pegs in round holes. However, matt is not going to back down from his ironclad preference for 442 (or 4411 as we played last night). kashket was probably our best performer once we stopped lumping hopeless balls to him. Angol does not work in that withdrawn striker / target man role which is why I think 433 would've been better with that 11. Gills defence was exceptional and their keeper superb. Neither keeper had a save to make except their one from kashmets volley. That's how tight a game it was. One mistake grrrr

As an alternative view I think Angol has been excellent these last couple of games. Definitely prefers it at his feet but some of his footwork and hold up play last night was first class. I get the target man point but I’m not wholly convinced Smith would have got much change aerially last night either.
For me Kashket wasn’t our best player last night. I’d say Eastmond was. Like the look of Clay a lot too, a great work ethic in there and can be quite composed in possession.
I’d agree signs are positive but of course we do have to cut the unforced errors to pick up the results.
We all knew a bit of patience was required this season and our forward orientated players will need a bit of time to build up understanding. We’re in better shape than I feared 3 weeks or so back.

A couple of views on Gills’ forum that Kashket may have been onside for the goal ruled out.
