There have been some really good comments on this thread regarding the squad, the way that we play etc. Do the team management ever read these comments? And others on the forum. Early in his time as Manager, Matt was asked directly if he read comments on the forum. Bear in mind the previous manager even replied on here - especially if something posted annoyed him. Matt said he did not read the forum. I guess that neither do the others in the management team. I have seen that sometimes failing tactics I have commented on get changed by the next match but I don't kid myself any notice was taken of my posts. Much more likely is that a failing which I noticed was also seen by the management and thus quickly addressed.

I find it a bit baffling that on a day we lost 3-0 at home to the poorest side I've seen this season (I wasn't at the Notts C game), some people are piping up about our strikers but being oddly silent about our defence. That's something that has happen 4 times since Matt has been in charge, and hasn't happened since Bradford killed off our play off dream 2 seasons ago. I thought in the first half we played better than than we did on Tuesday, but then the 2nd half came along and after we hit the post, barring one other effort, we were lacking all over the pitch. Some players who have not been mentioned so far I thought had really bad games, and this includes players who have been with us for a while. We seemed to have slipped back in the last 2 games to the way we played near the end of last season, and I really hope this is just a blip from us.
Compared to last season, we're 1 point behind however and we've still got 42 league games to go, so I'm not going to panic. If anything, as Matt rightly said in his interview, he now has a small window to get someone in to add to the way he wants us to play and can see our weaknesses. Which based on yesterdays game isn't only a striker.

Which based on yesterdays game isn't only a striker. No one is panicking as you can see what we are capable of after the Notts county game. The way i see it at the moment is that the team relies heavily on a player up front who can control the football and bring others in to play. If that doesn't happen it has a knock on effect throughout the rest of the team. I thought the midfield and defence visibly wilted as the game went on as they were continually under pressure due to poor hold up play. This was not the case against Notts & Cambridge but of course we are at present without Smith who did an excellent job in those two games. We need cover for this position as it has become obvious that Angol is no where near the the type of player required to play this role.To me he seems more suited to playing as a winger. He can be strong on the ball and maybe if he plays centrally he should be further advanced on the shoulders of the last defenders as where he played at Barrow.

We have no cover for Smith and that role, and to be honest, last season we did not have much cover for Omar B either, with KK sometimes doing ok. Before then we had Bennett who was just as good as Omar B usually.
The style we play more often than not requires that type of player being involved.
Also, since Omar S went off it seemed to dislodge our solid defence.
With regards to our defeats, While we have not looked great its not like we have been getting outplayed and the other teams have looked good. We could of nicked a point from top of the table Gillingham, nearly got points with 10 men away at Barrow, and yesterday's score flattered Wimbledon.
After Notts we have had a bit of a reality check. But our goal is to get more than 50 points and I certainly have not given up hope of that..

Watching yesterday's game I think that the organisation we have had over the last few years has come from adding to the squad in 3's and 4's then adding couple of loan players to the squad but this year we have had a complete clear out. Players left for many reasons and what we have got in I hope in time will gell and become a team. My biggest problem yesterday was the team lacked a passionate edge, we are playing the local rivals AFC Wimbledon now seeing their signings they made I think they have done well. Also the AFC Wimbledon has changed tactics to suit this league. So I can see them in our about playoff or even snatching 3rd. On Sutton front a new team will take 10 to 15 games to get together and once they are all on the same wave length I hope we pick up results. Notts County game was ad I said to a chap I was watching with either we get hammered or we win big. We won 5-1 Cambridge game played well against a got through on pens (Cambridge are top of League 1) Barrow again even with 10 we look comfortable and to conseed 2 goals in 3 mins was a big blow BUT Smith getting sent off was a talking point and I hope he has learnt from this and will come back stronger for us and score goals. Gillingham we lose 1-0 in a game we seemed to lack a clear plan and yesterday I have already touched on BUT this is all the process of being a new team and that we can build on this. I see one person earlier mentioned our defence yes at times we have looked vulnerable. This though is an area we have not changes too much over the last couple of season with Kizzi, Goodliffe and Milsom being the main people and John coming back in when fully fit. Sowunmi is new I like him I just think he just needs to get used to playing along side Goodliffe or John. Defence partnerships takes time to build. Some click over night other grow. So my conclusion is we should not press the panic button yet. We all need to take a deep breath and stay calm. The team will gell I am hopeful in this. I believe we grow stronger in every game and the passionate fight comes to express itself very soon. I have had the pleasure of watching Sutton since 1988 I can not tell you the ups and downs this football has given me and I think we are just starting a new chapter and I really want to see where it is taking us.

How's your footballing weekend been then ? Think the above just about covers it for me too. Like everyone else, I have many other thoughts about where we are which I won't bore your with. Noticeably however, Notts County gave us time and space to play the way we would like to unfortunately, Gilligham and Wimbledon did not. What can we do about that? I think, give Matt and the management team time to get all the new players to gel with the exisiting players in order become a revised version of the "effective unit" we have been over many years. This is the only way that we can ever really compete in this league as it can't possibly be by the acquisition of expensive individuals like other teams can (or in reality , of course, can't!) afford. I actually laughed out loud to see Mcauly Boone and Johnny Williams coming off the bench at the same time on Tuesday! "Punching above our weight" I think is the phrase or has that been used on here before?! One thing is for sure, whilst the effort and determination to be the best that SUFC can be continues to be shown by everyone associated with the club, I will never leave early (assuming one can stay to the end) and I will continue to clap and encourage the team off the pitch even louder when they lose than when they win.

Blimey. Lose to our noisy neighbours, and yes they were noisy yesterday and suddenly the doubters write swathes of their opinion on ap. The chap affectionately known as Matt on here, by one, at least, becomes Gray. This the guy responsible for taking us to where we are in the first place. Some rather short memories.
Let's give credit to AFCW and their manager, because they were a far different proposition to last season as they matched U's in their physical approach. They defended the wind better than U's ultimately did and got that first goal. Ben G came close to an immediate leveller but Pell's first contribution took the game away and the impressive Tilley continued his fine start to the season.
U's will look at the loss of Omar S as a disruption even with the experience of Louis J to replace him. LJ hasn't played a full 90 since last February and is still coming back from that long term injury.
Some have apparently suggested (on Twitter) that was the worst they have seen Sutton play under Matt. They obviously didn't travel to Colchester or Rochdale at the back end of last season.
Hopefully Omar S is ok.
A week off and a chance to regroup. I am not sure four league matches is the right time to dissect a new squad or how they are deployed; I think we should wait.

Let's not forget Wimbledon are 3rd at the moment. I know it's only after 4 games but the same can be said for our position.
I notice in the paper their manager commented on our physicality. I don't think we are a dirty team but when they roll around after the slightest touch and the ref gives them a free kick we're going to get more of the Naughty Sutton reputation.

I didn't go to either of those games, but bearing in mind the importance of playing our local rivals, and the fact that our tactics were awful on the day - countless long punts to the smallest player on the park, long throws even without Omar S when they hadn't worked with him, persisting with an obviously non-fruitful partnership up front - I would call it the most disappointing performance I've seen under Matt, if not the worst. Our midfield didn't compete in the first half. Coley spend too much time drifting inside to try impact the game, leaving no outlet on the right. Bringing on Clay to try win the midfield battle as a 3 and breaking up the clearly ineffective SK/LA partnership would've made a lot of sense. I just feel we've taken steps backwards tactically so far this season. If teams dont allow us to play our way or succumb to our directness, we've got no plan B. Without the destructive force of Smith or a player like Omar B, our pressing game does not work. Anyone who thinks 3-0 flattered AFCW must've missed the 3 or 4 last ditch blocks and goalline clearances and a great save by Rose in the first half, and the open goal miss shortly before their first. Make no mistake, 3-0 was fair. I've said it so many times, but we need a Plan B if we're going to progress beyond survival in this league.

I thought at the time that Wimbledon were rather niggly and, on checking, discovered they committed 18 fouls compared to just 7 by us. That's not an excuse for our mediocre performance but a free-kick every five minutes certainly didn't contribute to letting the game flow.

Views tend to lurch from one extreme to another on here, the fact is it was a poor performance against a similar quality side. AFCW are 3rd because they beat us, I doubt they will finish in that spot, as for us maybe its time to look at that 4-4-2 system.
