Not running for us. Thought Accrington comfortably the worst side we’ve played (8th!!) but walked away with 4-1. The ref gifting the pen hasn’t helped as it’s got them a foothold and they’ve picked us off a couple of times. Think overall a lot of positives today and whilst on paper a terrible result I feel like signs we’re heading the right way. We’ve looked ok going forward and played some decent enough stuff at times. Obviously work to do defensively - the third was worryingly easy, the 2nd a bad rare error from Goody. Next week is important, think we can get something from MK at home.

OK , I’ve now fully changed my side of the fence . This time last week I wrote that we should all get behind Matt , his management team and the players . After yet another very very poor result I am sorry to say that it is time for a change at the top before it’s too late . We are now bottom of the League and I know that it’s only mid September but seven League defeats on the trot and a stubborn refusal to try new tactics means we are in serious danger of throwing away all of the superb progress of the last three/four years . This does make me sad because I genuinely like Matt but it’s time for him to go please .

I do agree with you that systems and tactics must change and like I said be for, Matt must have it out with these players because it is not good enough. Let’s all keep the faith. ⚽️

I’m fully confident in Matt and that there’ll be more than 2 sides below us come season end. Lots of blind panic. Results not ideal obviously and we had this very same thing in Matt’s first season. The real place we need to put it right is at home. It’s always going to be hard away. The games we can’t afford are the likes of FGR and Wimbledon performances. We are not other clubs, we won’t be sacking Matt, energy is therefore better spent supporting next week and helping us move in the right direction.

Another easy day at the office for our opposition.
While I have previously stated how cup games will be a distraction for us. I am now perhaps of the view that focusing on them would at least possibly bring in a much needed finical boost which it is looking like we are going to need. As I cant see this team staying in this league. Our defence is absolutely diabolical.
It does not matter if we play well, we cant defend. And we are not good enough to concede more than a couple goals and expect to get anything.
Regarding Matt. Who knows what is in his head right now? Its not as if we will have a long list of managers knocking on our door. and the only chance we would have is if we got lucky with a young manager as we did with Matt which would be a toss of a coin.
If it was another team, One win and four draws in 19 league games would no doubt see them out the door. But we are Sutton and not got a reputation for sacking managers and Matt has done so well for us and has achieved more than he was expected to.
It was a worry when Matt said he was ill last week, And I do not doubt he was. I think he is passionate and wants to win, so it does make me wonder how this is effecting him and perhaps its not good for his health. We could get to a stage where a potential change could actually be good for him. One thing I will say, is if we get to the end of September or beginning of October with out a significant change of form, then I cant see what good it will be with Matt still being at the helm, it would not exactly be a very fun place for him to be.
Maybe a win comes and things change but if we cant defend we are not going to win any games. I really hope Matt can do some magic here as I have so much love for the guy, but I think a bit of magic is going to be what it takes.

What a rather silly comment to make.
“Matt really must look at these highlights..”
Do you think Matt and team watch Netflix during the week?! They will watch and analyse the whole match to try and improve things.

Getting someone new in at this point will solve nothing. We can't change the squad until January. And even then we wouldn't have a big budget to play with. Plus it's pretty obvious he hasn't lost the dressing room. Even if you can square those circles, who would we get in with the right experience to do the job. Invariably we'd have to employ an entire management team. If they're already successful, they'd already be in post and having that change will have financial implications both for the outgoing and incoming manager, meaning the already small budget takes a further hit. The logical way forward, taking out any emotion, is to stick with what we have. I'm not going to sit here saying what is wrong and I'm not going to arrogant enough to suggest any particular formation is the answer to our prayers, and in reality the last two games have been unacceptable and Matt probably does need to try something a bit different.

It is once again a story of individual errors leading to silly goals. It was like watching two teams today, before the goal it looked like a team who could worry the top teams of the league, after the goal it was lacking confidence and poor, rash decisions.
Matt is clearly trying new tactics to get the best out of the squad. He seemed to play more of a 4-2-3-1 today. The long throw was used but there was actually more shorter throws. If Harry Smith could stop missing free headers after he’s done well to find the space, the set pieces would still be a strength of the team.
A big positive for the first 40 mins was the link up between Jackson and coley down the right. Personally I would like to have seen Kashket start and link up with those two, hopefully he gets his chance midweek and makes a strong case for a start.
Similar to my views on last week, I still think Ben is the weak link at the back. His panic cost the second goal and I’d be interested to know where he was for the 3rd and 4th goals. He regularly leaves Louis exposed.
For those calling for Matt’s head, the question is who do you replace him with? Anyone who was approached will know the club are doing it out of desperation and could ask for a lot of money. Do you want a greedy manager who doesn’t care, or a guy who’s ensured the values of the club have been maintained as the club has gotten bigger with the recent successes under his leadership.

In reply to Andy K , I fully appreciate everything that Matt has done for our club and I would just love it if / when he does turn our fortunes around . As I said in my post I really do like the guy . My point is that our current tactics are simply not working . I’m sure Matt and the team are / will do everything they can but if things do not improve soon the club will surely have to consider an alternative manager . I fully appreciate that money is tight and that good managers do not grow on trees . I just believe something has to change soon .

I am not calling for Matt's head, there are a few more things to try yet, and players we need back especially in defence and midfield. Milson does not belong at LB, he is really needed in the middle. I am not sure what the situation is with Sam Hart, but he is a proper left back. Kizzi and Sowunmi have to start at the back for me.
We are desperately missing Eastie, and a fit Jon Bardon would really add some steel, that I am afraid is totally missing. Going forward we have scored 11 and that is actually midtable scoring, so that is fine. I could be wrong but I think a side with Kizzi / Goodliffe / Sowunmi (John) / Hart in defence with Bardon / Eastie and Milson available for midfield we would be a completely different team.
I have seen many a poor start to a season, this one does remind me a bit of 03/04 when we couldn't buy a win until about October, JR bought one player in to play in front of the back 4, and I think we only lost 1 from xmas until the end of the season. (3pts for guessing who that player was?)

I don’t think changing the manager will significantly change our fortunes, but equally I’m just as cautious of the about the secret combination out there yet to be unlocked that will take us up the table. It would seem to me that we might be just be out of our depth in league two.
In a division where players are moving for the paycheque more than anything else, revenue is the king. It sets the budget and Matt has done a great job in getting the best he can within that budget. In fact, a remarkable job considering, the pay is low, the crowds are small and the club is in one of the most expensive areas of the country but you do get what you pay for, so perhaps there’s no plan B because the team management realize these limitations and simply cut the suit according to the cloth.
Like it or not, aside of our emotional but irrational ties to our teams, football is a business. One that costs a huge amount of money, even at this level to sustain, let alone develop it. I imagine the league enforced ground improvements bit deeply into the revenues with restraints needed elsewhere. If we survive this year I believe the new tv money kicks in which for a club like ours has to be immense. Presently, or at least over here, there is a tremendous interest in buying league two clubs, because they are considerably cheaper than a MLS franchise and are a bargain basement entry into a global sport. We are rightly proud on not being a boom or bust club and being fiscally responsible but perhaps the downside to that it can only get you so far.
I’ve read on here about folks who don’t like the prices, the food or beer selections and even some who recommend visiting fans to seek out other venues. Some of these are the same ones who seem to have a hard time with the new and younger fans and not just because of their alleged behavior. These services and these fans are the additional revenue streams so badly needed by clubs of this size.
I hope we stay up and I’ll renew my season ticket as well as my iFollow pass. It’s not all gloomy, back when I used to steward, only two games a season would bring 1000 gates down the Kiddiminster and Barnet and I think we’re bigger than both other now.

I have not seen the matches in full, only the highlights of our last two away games so I accept that clips can be misleading. However a common feature was an opponent on the ball sprinting down their left wing. Nobody playing at right back for Sutton appears in shot while the video clip runs. Sometimes Ben Goodliffe, our #5, eventually catches up near the goal line, but he is squared-up and easily beaten. Ben is not a full-back. I read in accounts from those who went to the game that Jackson (RB) combined well with Coley in attack. That might explain why he wasn't in shot when a RB was needed -stranded up-field when the opposition counter.

We are matching teams in many ways, but have moments in the game where the defence is gone. Everything else does not matter. Its like trying to fill up a bucket with a hole in it. I just hope the players who are playing well do not get fed up. I would bring back Sowunmi, if anything we looked more solid with him there, Particularly if you consider the three against Wimbledon were after he went off ill.
