Yes, sorry. You are correct. One point and not zero. But I still don't agree with having a shootout.

Yes we get 1pt Villa get 2pts
For the first 75mins it didn't look as if any of the Sutton players had ever met before, all playing as individuals and wasteful going forward. Villa offered very little going forward but were gifted a penalty and then the freedom of the town to score a second.
Individually the players are good enough, but a lot still needs to be done in the gelling department.
Incidentally I see the scoreboard is now completely busted, it only needed a 20 quid part before !!!

Was that Charlie Kendall we had on the left wing last night?

Rose Jackson Kizzi Sowunmi Hart mellor Beautyman N'Guessan Pereira Angol Kashket Couldn’t go last night - how did the team perform? A few changes I note - some good minutes for players in need of them. Some good battling qualities to come from 0-2 down to gain a draw. Hart going off a precaution?

It was nice to see them keeping it on the ground with not much hoofing as it just goes to show that they can play football when it counts. Roll on Saturday when we get a second win and the first of a run of results 👍

After last night's game were we actually played football on the ground. Which was nice to see that we can. I hope that it continues into our league games. As been said, still have to blend better together. Was Ben and H Smith rested,or have they picked up an injury?

Is it just me or are the penalty shootouts ridiculous when a game is a draw? If you draw 2-2 shouldn't it be a point apiece? The only thing I can see a benefit in having them is it gives players more experience when in a situation when a penalty shootout matters more. It just seems a trifle unfair that Sutton end up with zero points. Think we still get a point for the draw and Villa get the bonus point for winning the penalty shoot out. Very pleased that we at least get a point out of this game

Slightly worrying that according to the title of the thread we not able to beat “Aston Villla Tuesday” thank goodness it wasn’t Sheffield Wednesday then! 😉

Totally agree with you on that one, because it penalises the team who get a draw from the game, because the other team know they get the lottery off penalties. ⚽️⚽️

The penalty shoot-out and extra point for the winners help to separate sides in what will often by tight groups.
This is a competition that struggles to carve out a space for itself in the football forest, and features like this do give it a bit more of an identity.

This is a competition that struggles to carve out a space for itself in the football forest, and features like this do give it a bit more of an identity. Unlike the league cup there is prize money if you win or draw games in the trophy. Without a sponsor the money has gone down. Clubs are now paid £8,000 for a group-stage win and £4,000 for a draw compared to the previous £10,000 and £5,000 on offer. Victory in the round of 32 is now worth £15,000, rather than £20,000, while progression from the round of 16 will earn £29,5000, down from £40,000. Teams who win in the quarter final will now receive £40,000 instead of £50,000 and the runners-up in the competition will be net £42,000 – £8,000 less than before. The winners will no longer receive £100,000, with £84,000 instead paid out to the top team.

Thanks for that update - I did wonder how not having a sponsor would affect the prize money, and luckily not as much as I feared. Just a quick correction. There is prize money for the league cup. We've currently won £12k (£5k for the first round and £7k for the 2nd), and there is £10k for 3rd round winners, £15k for 4th round, £25k for each quarter final and semi final win, finalists get £50k and winners get £100k.

It seems a bit perverse that the financial reward for winning your first two games in the League Cup, especially given it has a sponsor, is less than that for the less prestigious EFL Trophy for which clubs have three bites of the cherry: £12k cf £16k.
