Hey there, Wycombe fan here. I wanted to give a snapshot of Dom Gape for you.
He is a classic defensive midfielder, a true 4 (or 6 as it seems the position is known in the PL now), though he has a decent range of passing on him too. He does not score a lot of goals, but when he does, they are either important, or a cracker. I think he only ever scored 4 for us, but one was the goal that took us up from L2 in 2017/18, and last season's effort was a pitching wedge lob of the Barnsley goalkeeper from around 45 yards!
His style is very much of the "terrier" mould. When we got promoted from L1 into the Championship, we basically played two defensive midfielders in Gape and Curtis Thompson (now at Cheltenham) who would nip at the opposition heels, hound them to within an inch of their life, protect the backline, and start attacks too. Gape was an absolutely vital part of that incredible promotion for us.
Unfortunately, once we got in the Championship, Gape got injured almost right away (having not been particularly injury prone before), and it just seems to have been a constant string of knocks since that point. He went from appearing in anywhere from 32-43 games a season (and 28 in the Covid shortened season) to just 14 in the Championship, and then 10 and 15 in the past two seasons. He rejected our offer of a contract renewal, and my guess is that we offered less based on the injury record. This is obviously the most significant risk for you at Sutton, as he now has a three year period right in his prime which was really hampered.
As a character, Gapey is brilliant. Somewhat quiet, but well spoken, and a leader by example - he would have been next in line for our captaincy had he stayed. Very much a good individual to integrate into your squad from a dressing room personality point of view.
And there you basically have it. I wish Dom and Sutton every success together. There is the injury risk involved, but if he is past that, you will find yourselves with a vastly experienced player in the lower leagues who bolsters your defensive attributes while having some attacking nous. He has been a part of two fantastic promotions from L2 to the second tier, and should bring some real benefits to you.
I wish you well as a club either way - Sutton have always come across as a fantastic club, so I really hope you crack on and start climbing that table!
