Crickey. A real shame that it's got to this. Matt has given us memories we could only have dreamed of a few years ago, and for that he will always be viewed as a legend of SUFC.
But, ruthless as it is, we need to throw everything at staying in this division. Now let's all hope and pray we can do just that...

Mixed feelings here. Very Sad for Matt and the end of an amazing era and I feel for the guy. But you have to say he was given a long time to turn it around, and to be fair, whoever comes in now will have their work cut out.
The right time with Jan looming. I think from here on we will find out pretty quickly if the team can turn a corner, or if Relegation is a cert.
Now onto the big question, who is the man going forward?

Another question, if not so big, when will the new manager be in place and is somebody already lined up? And following on from that, who'll be in charge on Saturday if the new manager is not in place?

I presume it will be Jason Goodliffe taking over this Sat, until a decision is made. Presuming the coaching staff are all staying. Perhaps he will be offered the job.

Join the EFL and leave your traditional values behind you. No longer #inittogether apparently.

Very sad but can understand reasoning behind it, let’s hope for both Sutton and Matt that things can now turn out better as new avenues open up.
Sutton still has time to avoid the drop as I believe the Board have made the right decision at the right time before panic mode sets in.

Jimmy Dack could also be asked (as he was in 2008), or there could be someone new in place, however unlikely that sounds. And if a new manager is appointed, there is no guarantee that any of the coaching staff will be in place - the new person may wish to bring in their own backroom team. We just have to wait and see.

A really sad day but as I said to others as we came out of the ground on Saturday, I couldn't see how he could survive after that.
The players have to take some responsibility but you can't sack a squad and in football it's always the man at the top who takes the flack.
Can't disagree with Tony D on his sentiment but going into the EFL was always going to change the club's ethos (not for the better in my opinion but then perhaps I have a rose tinted view of the past).
It could be argued that Matt has become a victim of his own success. Certainly not the first football manager to be so nor the last.
Thanks Matt for taking SUFC into lands none of us could ever have envisaged. And doing it without becoming Mr Bigtime Charlie and from the start tapping into the spirit of the club. It's been surreal at times.
All the best for the future.

Such a shame to see him go after all that he has done for the club and supporters.Came across as a really nice guy but i think he had run out of ideas at the end and lacked experience when things got tough. I wish him well in his next position and thank him for all the success he brought us.

Thanks to Matt for his efforts in taking this club to a place we never expected to reach. To become a league club almost by accident has left a tall order that has gone badly wrong this season. We’ll now find out whether someone else can get more out of what we’ve got. That person at least has January pretty much straight away to put perhaps a little of their own mark on the squad on the assumption a few spaces can be found and the financial puzzle be pieced together. Odd we’ve lost 1 in 6 in the league - add in 2 important FA Cup wins - and you wouldn’t ordinarily expect a sacking at that point, but we did still lack victories in that time and our handicap of starting the season 10 matches late has ultimately left us in a vulnerable position and under pressure.
I wish Matt all the very best for the future. I’m certain he’ll come back and do a very good job somewhere else. For a long time we were rightly mostly concerned he’d be picked off by a bigger club and now it has come to this.

Football management is a lonely place when things are going wrong. We had two great seasons but the wheels began to come off last season.
We have a decent squad that might be galvanised by a new manager with players staying that may have possibly left in January.
The fact that we are in league 2 is down to Matt and we should not forget that.

Thanks Matt for taking the club to some high and heady places with so little to do it with. You give it your all.

Like many others, I've got mixed feelings about this. I had a lot of time for Matt, and of course he's earned an important place in the club's history, but this season we have appeared to be sliding back to the level we were at when he was appointed. The result at Stockport, coupled with the manner of that defeat, was the decisive blow.
It remains to be seen whether a new managerial regime can haul the club to safety. There's a lot of work to do but, as Gareth L says, the January window provides an opportunity to overhaul the squad.
