A significant date in Sutton's history.
54 bloody years ago, where did that all go?

More worryingly, it’s already seven years since we gained revenge!

we still have some significant revenges to meet out.
Norwich Middlesborough for starters.

I was otherwise engaged on that day, playing for Surrey against Hampshire in the FA County Youth Cup at Guildford City FC.It was a 1-1 draw but i scored 2 in extra time to put us through to the next round.
The strange thing was that Dario Gradi was our manager. All the other games i played for them were midweek affairs.I remember he phoned the ground to see how we had got on.Of course we all knew the Sutton score.I still think that was a great performance by Sutton against probably the best team in England,if not Europe at that time.
We got knocked out by Hertfordshire (the eventual winners that year) in the next round at the old Kingstonian ground 3-1 with Billy Jennings scoring a couple.
Most of the players are listed with their schools in the programmes but at Number 7 in both games was J.Honeywood of Sutton United.

That would be Jim Honeywood.
He did play a handful of first team matches split over a few years in the 1970s but, if I recall correctly, as a centre back.

An R.Hooks of Glyn Grammar School played in both those games as well. That might be a misprint for Richard Hooke who i played with for Surrey schoolboys.I believe he played for Sutton as well?

It was a bit of a tight squeeze on that day. I know where i stood which is now the Tardis terrace. Even though the crowd was 13000 the queues to actually buy a ticket in advance were unbelievable. Looking at that video reminds me that the health and safety people would have had a nervous breakdown that day !
