Maybe, just maybe, chumminess isn't at a premium just at the moment? Chumminess isn’t necessarily required but I think Steve is bordering on being rude. Questions about players and substitutions, tactics, and the success or not of these, are pretty standard in all post match interviews so he needs to be prepared to answer them in a professional manner.

Perhaps. I think Tony comes across as a decent chap and maybe they need to have a chat about it. But to me it does seem to be quite clear in what the areas of discussion he becomes a bit abrupt and unwilling to play ball. For example, asking why he made subs and at a given time. and not only asking the question but presenting a presumption as to why. Perhaps he does not want opposition managers to have an incite into why he is doing things? He could step around such questions and entertain them, and probably would if it was a Sky interview where a journalist is not assigned by the club. He may think the clubs own broadcasts could be more mindful.

I think they are both 'decent chaps' but it's obvious they have totally different interview styles. It's very unfair to suggest that Steve is 'bordering on rude'. He is in the serious business of trying to save us from a very costly relegation i.e. get us out of the mess that he certainly didn't create. Being 'chummy' should be the last thing on his mind. He took the job on, reckoning he could save us but probably now thinks he's entered a worse situation than he thought.

I take your point. Still, while Tony is nice and is an excellent commentator (imo), where the game itself is suppying him with a structure, he can come over as a litte waffly in interview and match announcements. Maybe he wasn't the right man for the job? Maybe no-one was? Think of the context of the interview. A bloody great wheel just fell off of Steve's attempt to keep us up. Due to spurned scoring chances and some old, bad, habits creeping back in. That wasn't the plan, and we were seeing one very pissed off manager, doing his best to hide it. Which I imagine does not come too easily to him. But from full time of that match he is now under immense pressure. As are we as a club.

Doesn't sound like a bad idea for the two of them to spend a couple of minutes together off-camera for a chat about what sort of interview style would work best.

Steve sounds increasingly irritated by these interviews. Is he obliged to do them? The interview after yesterday’s match was 2 minutes 2 seconds long. I think this is setting the pattern for the coming season. Still awaiting for SM to appear on the podcast 😀😀😀

To my mind Tony is sounding more and more like an accomplished defence lawyer defending a difficult case.
