I’ve just seen the club statement on the abolition of FA Cup replays.
The FA has missed the point (again, do I hear you cry ?), they seem to think the extra money compensates. Yes, the money from replays and the replay pot is useful, sometimes vital, but sport is about more than money. As the late Danny Blanchflower said, football is about the glory.
When a club plays away to a bigger team, the dream is to get a draw and “bring ‘em back to our place.” If you are at home, obviously hope for the win but if not then the draw earns the replay at a possibly world famous stadium. The excitement builds during the whole period leading up to the game, it reaches a peak just before kick-off. Penalties after 90 minutes isn’t quite the same!
I meant to add, with this rule in place we wouldn’t have had the fantastic memories of our replay at Middlesbrough, the best U’s display ever, when our magnificent players received a standing ovation from the home fans after the game and Boro manager Bruce Rioch led a guided tour of the famous old stadium.

Sign of the times, pathing the way to a European Super League. Good riddance. A long way from the good old days, Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday needed 4 replays in 1979 to seperate the 2 teams. Unfortunately money rules and the expansion of Euro competitions has increasingly reduced the importance of the FA Cup to the elite clubs.

AFC Wimbledon in 2017.
A drab (compared to our other games in that run) 0-0 draw followed by extra time in which we'd probably run out of puff against a side 2 leagues higher - are they still doing extra time? - or penalties nobody wants to see.
