We played rather well. So much better than last week.

Firstly, hope their guy who was stretchered off is not as bad as feared. A broken tibia was mentioned. Not sure there was any malicious intent as the ball looked to have been played by the Sutton player but I expect the follow through was the issue. Had the ref, who was quite ridiculous in his decision making at times had blown up for the obvious foul beforehand the incident probably wouldn't have occurred.
As for Sutton. What a difference to last week. The energy was back, great movement, some good passages and patterns of play. De Silva's goal was a peach.
Defence had a couple of shaky moments, the hosts hitting the bar twice. All that in the first half.
The second saw U's in control for the most part.
Still a work in progress but not surprising considering the amount of new players. Perhaps we will need to expect some less impressive displays such as at Dartford while the squad grows together.
Pre season over and a generally positive one at that.
Interesting to note Welling now using the dressing rooms under the Erith & B stand. Having used the loo behind the old stand if that is anything to go by I expect the old dressing rooms are no longer fit for purpose.

I’ve just read online that Barrie Hobbins passed away earlier this year, I wasn’t aware. It must have been strange for our officials today, going into their boardroom for the first time without Barrie and his brother Graham there. They achieved great things for Welling and were always happy to talk and share their knowledge.

I found this rather interesting post on the Welling forum:
I was disappointed with the 0 - 3 score, as we had decent openings and hit the woodwork several times, it was just they got their shots better on target in this game.
Sutton were really good though, after the match I looked into their background, as I knew they are National League, but I'd not realised they were relegated from the Second Division last season, so actually knowing that now makes our performance better than it may look from the score alone, as they'll be a full time team, and have got bags of experience from playing last season in the Second Division. The speed with which they moved the ball from one end of the pitch to the other was classy, I can't recall any side last season being better than Sutton. So creating clear openings against such a team, and not conceding in the second half, is good. As we're still getting the squad fit rather than aiming for results we didnt start with a couple of probable regular starters, and if we'd played them from the start the result may have been closer.
We didnt get enough players forward for our long ball clearances to work, as they usually had 4 or 5 back defending against our 2 in attack, and little support from the midfield, but we were quite disjointed in passing, very few moves of three or more passes, but again, that reflects so well on the opposition pressing us. After all the pre-season games against higher and lower league teams it will be good when the season starts and we'll finally see what we are like against NLS teams.

It's comforting to read that not EVERYBODY knows that we've just fallen out of the EFL...

The game was effectively won in the first half when we were playing up the slope. The cracking early goal from Dillon de Silva set the tone, and was followed by two more tidy finishes from midfielders. Welling struck the bar twice before half-time, but rarely threatened thereafter. Ashley Nadesan came on as a second half sub and looked lively without having a clear sight of goal.
We'll have a better idea of how good this rebuilt side actually is after next Saturday's match in Staffordshire.

Interesting too that they thought this side had bags of L2 experience when many have none. Hopefully a testament to how they’ve come together as a team over that last few weeks and sets us up well for the season to start. Good performance yesterday and enjoyable football to watch.
