Cressing Rd has changed little since our last visit there under Dos, red card and all, but the pitch looks better, an October visit rather than a later one in the season? Felt for their pa guy too. Produced the prog, tried to get gatemen to sell it (too much for them apparently) and ended up putting them in the fan zone bar. And all before standing in as the announcer. And we're struggling to find gate staff for next Sunday. Non-League at its finest.
As for the match, well, Braintree were a step below our recent oppo and their main threat was from set-pieces. On the whole U's dealt with them well with the back three all performing well, probably Charlie Waller's best in a U's shirt. Having weathered an early push by the hosts and a goal ruled out for offside Sutton settled but rarely looked like beating Covolan.
Second half started well and the second of two good combinations down the right saw Will Davies score the only goal. After that it was reasonably comfortable. A decent performance considering how many players were missing and that those who filled in, in unfamiliar positions, did well enough so that the team was able to play as a well-drilled unit.
Jack Sims has yet to have a shot to save in open play in his two league starts. That might be a different scenario next week.
Not going to go overboard about a win at Braintree but it stopped the three match losing run, produced some good individual performances throughout the team and left U's hanging onto a play off position. Will do for me.
As for the ref, not sure why he isn't booking Covolan for collecting a back pass like that; the fact he didn't realise it until a word was placed in his earpiece, maybe why. Other than that, typical NL ref. We have seen a lot worse.
Onto the big payday next Sunday.
