This really is depressing.
The main thing about the love of football is the chance, the luck, the hope of what is possible.
If it all comes to down to science what fun is there? What hope is there for upsets? We all love football because it is is unpredictable.

Sorry Dave, but football has been science since at least the late 80s, as mentioned in the theme tune to Jossy’s Giants…
“Swapping their homework for footwork, Kicking the ball till its dark,
Here go Jossy's Giants, Footballs just a branch of science, Head the ball, now Jossy calls . . . Jossy's Giants!
Dependable, Reliant Put your faith in Jossy's Giants Get stuck in, we're gonna win . . . Jossy's Giants!”

Ultimately, it's about studying patterns, making predictions and seeing if you were right, then perhaps using that information to improve things. Someone else studying this and calling it science is not going to affect your experience of watching football. Predictions are often incorrect even if they are based on the best data and knowledge available, because football is played by human beings.

As a (retired) Statistician, I'm looking forward to seeing how data is applied in the game, though I can perfectly understand it might not appeal to some.

An enjoyable and interesting evening with two very passionate speakers. Thanks to all concerned. Thought they both did extremely well to keep it to a reasonable length of time! Although Jon was still holding court when I left a while ago. Was a great insight, lots of sense spoken and my knowledge has certainly grown. Thanks to Claire our SLO for sorting.
