Tomorrow the draw takes place for the 3rd round of the FA Trophy, obviously a competition we've not been in for 3 years (the last time we went out to Woking in the 5th round, after beating St Albans and Dagenham).
The draw for the 3rd round is regionalised and some of the teams from outside the National League include Boreham Wood, Peterborough Sports, Hadley, Basford United, AFC Totton, Salisbury, Hampton & Richmond, Hanwell Town, Horsham, Gosport Borough, Havant and Waterlooville, Slough Town, Chesham United, Worthing, Sittingbourne, Torquay, Chertsey Town (again!), Weymouth and Eastbourne. Quite an ecclectic mix of sides were familiar with and ones we've hardly ever faced.
As there are 12 other sides from the National League we could face (as the 3rd round is regionalised), there's a higher probability that we'll get a side lower than us in the pyramid. 9 of those 12 sides currently sit below us in the National League.

I’d never heard of Basford United before, they’re based in Nottingham. Doubt they’ll be in our half of the draw

Suspect there wasn't an even cut re the north south regionalisation in the draw. I assume Basford was the most southerly of the northern clubs so ended up in the southern part of the draw. Didn't do them any harm. They're in the Northern Premier which is currently being dominated by Macclesfield.

There are lots of very winnable ties. FGR away would be the one to avoid.

Without being complacent that’s a pretty kind draw for us, Fleet are having a torrid season.

As it's been a while, probably worth mentioning that the FA Trophy has no replays in any rounds, no extra time in any round except the final and the 2 legged semi finals are also a thing of the past.

Think the two-legged semi-finals were removed fairly recently in the Trophy.

Think the two-legged semi-finals were removed fairly recently in the Trophy. Does that mean a neutral ground? I remember the Amateur Cup semis were at neutral grounds and going to Griffin Park and Selhurst Park.

I remember the Amateur Cup semis were at neutral grounds and going to Griffin Park and Selhurst Park. No, that's never been a thing in the Trophy. In the first 3 seasons, it was a one legged affair drawn in the same way as earlier rounds. The 2 legged semi final was introduced in the 73/74 season until the 19/20 season when it was removed after Covid which course took place in September, with the final for that season taking place in May 2021, 3 weeks before the 20/21 final.
