To take it a step further you'd be quite happy to see 11 different players for each of the 42 games as long as they won the league ?

Er, Billy, I could go back to the 1930's when U's used as many players as they have this season, so it's hardly a new phenomenon. You should see how many players Boreham Wood & Heybridge have used this season.
As has been said before a whole new squad was put together at the beginning of the season and since then Dos had alot of injuries to contend with. He's used youngsters from the ressies as well as bringing in new faces too.
If we finish in the play-offs how could any one complain?

Just wondering Billy but why are 90% of your posts in a negative light towards the team?

As i've said in an earlier post, the CORE of the team this season has been pretty consistent - Dos knew which players he wanted in to build a team around, and with the exception of Craig Davis I think he still has that - yeah he's used a lot of players, but I'd say less than last season, and when you see the starting line up tomorrow, a good 70% could well be players we've had from July!

Just wondering Billy but why are 90% of your posts in a negative light towards the team? Sorry about that i will try harder! Don't like to keep repeating myself but i'm trying to learn from you blokes so cut me a bit of slack ? The 18 non league games i've been to are my first since 1996 (the week after Beckham scored from the halfway line at Selhurst) and that was a one off. The last season i attended regularly was when they scrapped the offside from free kicks,or did i dream that ? When i go to the next home game i will be seeing my fortieth different player,i find it incredible that's all. PS........when i say try harder i don't mean i'm going for 100%

Picking up on TonyD's point I can't argue with the job Dos has done at all and as someone who doesn't get to most games welcome the interview he gives after every game and the honesty with which he gives his views. He is also someone that seems to have a tremendous amount of respect and loyalty from the players at this level and doesn't seem to have any trouble attracting the players - they really seem to want to play for him and therefore us. It bodes well for next season and whether in this league or not we can look forward to even better things.
As to the comment on the number of players used it has all been said above. All teams and sides look to put together a consistent side over as long as possible but Dos has not had the opportunity to get that side sorted yet. He has always been looking for an addition here or there over the season to ensure he gets the right blend - players also become available to improve the team at random times, e.g Hughes. By next year I'd expect the side to be settled and playing to a better level.
It would be great to finish the season in style and be playing a division higher by the time we re-start in August. Either way at least the fans have had some wins to celebrate and the crowds haven't diminished completely - credit too must go to the core of the fan base for showing their loyalty and hanging in there too.

I would without any problem what so ever in fact just promotion will do. The RP is a tough old league and difficult to get out of it can drag you down and you don't want to be hanging about there for long.

I do find it amazing how many players all clubs "go through" these days.Football continues to evolve but whether it is for the better is a matter of personal taste.I still hanker after the days when you could name nine or ten out of the starting eleven but given that is well and truly a thing of the past and if it takes a flow through of some 40 players to get promotion then so be it. Slightly off subject but I do recall reading a piece in a non league football programme in the mid 80's (can't remember which one) where the author wrote that if we were not careful the future of football could end up with Nintendo Utd playing AMSTRAD City. It's not far off that now in the EPL and the use of so many players in one season even at our level does take away some of the 'gloss' IMHO.

Don't worry Andy Martin is still moving clubs regularly and is presently with Chipstead after playing against us earlier this season for Maidstone.I spoke to him last night as he coaches Merstham's youngsters.

Am curious as to how many 1st team players we actually have at the moment ? Am also wondering why we have a reserve team as I could count on one hand the amount of times a registered 1st team player has played for them, even if not being selected for the 1st team squad ? Surely if coming back from injury or even lack of on field action it would be good practice for players to stay sharp and also try to impress so as to force their way back and create healthy competition for 1st team places. Am just a bit concerned that any players we have at the moment would stand a better chance of getting in the 1st team at Sutton if they played for someone else. We could end up losing some potentially good players that are already here, as they may start to feel that their way is blocked because of the policy of constantly recruiting from outside. I do realize that if a certain player becomes available, and that he would be an asset to the team/club that it would be foolish not to try and sign him, but the grass is not "always" greener

Seems a strange thing to say seeing as in recent games more young players have been given chances than for a while - Graham, Dunn, the new right back (forgot the name).
I'll take your word on it that 1st team squad members aren't playing in the reserves but I would think if Dos thought they needed the matches he would play them. I do seem to recall virtually a full first team being put out in the reserves in one game this season?

That was against Met Police. You`ve named (or very nearly named ;D ) 3 But over the course of the season so far, the amount of games played and up against the influx of players brought in, it`s not exactly brilliant is it ? Don't get me wrong here...........my main concern is that a lot of players that we as a club have nurtured for a number of years will decide that their future lies elsewhere and another team/club will end up reaping the benefits.

I think if we blood/bring on 3 players a year that would be an excellent return. It's unrealistic to expect much better than that. Obviously the ideal would be having a 1st team full of home grown talent but that would be nigh on impossible at this level. The club should continue to target having as many youngsters progressing as possible - it is certainly the most cost effective route and the odd one (note another recent open thread) can go on to make you a nice little earner.

Billy Chattaway is a very talented young lad,and it may be best that some players do gain expeareance elsware, other players in the past have been through the same, and moved on and have gained invaluable expeareance and have improved as players and who knows could return at some stage,it is a downer to have to leave a club when you have been there along time and see other players come in,but Sutton is not the only club,if its the right time to go then move on who knows whats round the corner.
