Football journalist Ian Ridley recently became chairman of Dr Martens League Premier Division club Weymouth, the club he has supported for over 40 years.
The bad news is the club has debts of £250,000 and a weekly wage bill of £4,000. 2003 news story! My how far they've come!

Except the debt is twice as big and the wage bill was about 5 times the size of that!

I thought these clubs (all clubs in fact) had to show the league that they are financially sound before being allowed to play? If Weymouth had debts of 250k back in 2003 how were they allowed to move up the pyramid on money they clearly did not have?
Almost ever club promoted from the Connie Sth to the Conf Nat has ended up in the crap, Canvey, Weymouth, Grays, Sailsbury. Lewes and even Histon are spending money they don't have. Is it not about time it was stopped for the good of the game? Not to mention how can we or any well run club like ours ever climb the leagues against a backdrop of money being spent by others which is effectively theft?
I hope that Weymouth and clubs like them fold and that resounds through football to restore commonsense and fair play.
I know not everyone agrees with me!

Weymouth have now announced that they'll revert to part-time status next season.
Hardly surprising, but another reality check for them!
