How many of you remember the notable Sutton victory on Saturday 20 March 1999, as we marched towards the Ryman League title? Four nights earlier we'd won impressively 3-0 at Hendon, with Mark Watson putting in one of his best ever centre forward performances in Sutton colours. That result left us 2nd in the table, three points behind Aylesbury, as we played at home to third-placed Purfleet (this being before they changed their name to Thurrock). After a goalless first half, the visitors went ahead from a free kick. They held that lead as the game entered added time. Then Sutton were awarded a penalty, which Mark Watson converted. From the restart Purfleet pressed forward in an attempt to regain the lead, but their attack broke down, with Steve Watson collecting the ball and running over half the length of the pitch to score a spendid winner. The opposition may have been distinctly unglamorous, but this was still one of the most thrilling climaxes to a match I've seen at GGL. The rest of that season, as they say, is history!

I can only recall the wild celebrations at the Collingwood end when Steve Watson tucked away that winner.
