Fourth place with four games to go: I guess we'd have taken that if it had been offered at the start of the season.
It's good to know that three of our final four opponents have already lost to us this season. Six points from those matches should clinch a play-off place - although we might have to take three from either the Bobbins or AFC Hx, the sides best placed to overtake us.
With Tonbridge now eight points ahead of us (and with a much better gd), I think fourth is the highest we can expect to finish. But we can afford to slip a place and still get into the play-offs. If we do make it, we might even prefer to finish fifth and travel midweek to Wheatsheaf Lane, where Staines have been faltering a little lately, rather than a Tonbridge ground still seething with indignation after our match there in February.
What we don't really want is to scrape into the play-offs only to be routinely disptched in the first round. But our recent form suggests that this will happen. We've won only four of our last fifteen games. (Before that we'd won eight out of ten, in a run that lifted us from mid-table to the top five.) Since January we've drawn too often, particularly at home - although the points from those draws have helped us to hang on to fourth place.
What we really need now is goals. We've only scored one in our last four games - and that was a penalty. This is rather ironic as we seem to have a surfeit of strikers at the moment - there were four of them on the bench last Saturday (five if you count Dundo). Perhaps the finally fit Steve Watts will start knocking them in. Or maybe Chukki will rediscover the scoring form we saw in November. Whatever happens this Easter, it's goals as much as wins that will resurrect our hopes of a quick return to Blue Square South. ;D
