Can someone shed some light on a couple of rules that may or may not have been introduced to Sutton's league in years gone by,possibly the early/mid nineties please ?
To settle a friendly argument from last night in The Gander. Were one or both of these rules ever implemented ?
First - A team,on winning a throw - in could elect to kick it back in to play and nobody could be deemed offside.
Second - There was no offside from free kicks.I'm sure i remember Stuart Hemsley drilling them in under the bar with that area a mass of bodies.
I hope i've remembered these details correctly,i'd had about 8 pints of London Pride by that stage.Thanks.

The kick in was certainly an experiment for a season in the Isthmian League. It didn't go down too well with most. Dunno about the second bit.

Kick in was an Isthmian trial rule. Horrible. Especially when facing the likes of Grays at the time.
The no offside from FK's was a conference rule. About 87? Was quickly abandoned after ourselves and a couple of other sides worked out you could cause complete carnage by just packing the box. Boots were duly filled, with some silly scores racked up and the Conference binned it soon after.
Amusing though!

Yes, it was a joke. You'd catch the opposition offside and then smack a free kick into a crowded penalty area. I remember one game against Enfield that was nothing more than giant end to end kicks, I don't think the ball touched the ground in the middle of the park except for kick-offs. Sutton were particularly adept at these tactics with the big team that Barrie had assembled. Fortunately the crazy idea was abandoned after one season.

The 'no offside from a free kick' rule was, I think, introduced by the Conference for the 1990/91 season.
The kick-in featured in the Isthmian League in 1994/95. St Albans City took a principled stand against it and instructed their players not to take kick-ins. I seem to recall that at least some of their league opponents (including us) respected that decision and declined to take kick-ins in their games against the Saints.

The no offside from a free kick rule was trialled pre 1988-9 season. The rule that allowed you to kick rather than throw the ball in was early 90's and that was as CRAP as you could get. I remember the Gray's full back/captain Billy ? could land a kick from his corner flag right into our penalty area. Also it wasted time as he always walked slowly from where he was to take the kick. Deep joy

Fil, it was Big Bily Goldstone. He scored from a free-kick from almost the half way line at GGL in a season's opener that finished 2-2. I think it was Ganey's last season in charge.
