For those of you who fancy a pint or two before Tuesday night's game, here are details of the three current Good Beer Guide pubs (all of which I have personally inspected ) in the town of my birth.
Black Jug (31 North St, RH12 1RJ) Handy if travelling by train as it's 5 minutes on foot from the station, on the way to the ground via the town centre. A smart, well-run pub with a very pleasant walled garden area at the back. Beers include Harveys Sussex Best and possibly one from the local Weltons brewery. Good food and real cider too!
Malt Shovel (15 Springfield Rd, RH12 2PG) Not far from the Black Jug, although going here (along the A281, Albion Way) takes you a bit further from the ground. A former Hogshead, this is a fairly basic pub (with bare floorboards) but has a wide choice of ales, possibly including one from another local brewery Hepworths.
Foresters Arms (43 St Leonards Rd, RH13 6EH) Close to the ground (go a bit further out of town and turn left) this pleasant suburban pub usually serves Harveys and a couple of other beers from medium-sized breweries.
Note: most pubs in town are badged with the logo of the former Horsham brewery King & Barnes, which sadly closed nine years ago. The K&B pub estate was bought up by the Dorset brewery Badger who continue to brew something called K&B Sussex Bitter in Blandford Forum. If you like your beers sweet, malty and cloying by all means drink them but I shall be giving these pubs a wide berth!
