Our topsy-turvy start to the season continues as we win and lose alternate matches. Today, Wealdstone did to us what we did to Hendon on our last trip to NW London, winning 2-1 with a last minute goal. At least it was better than last season's 0-4!
This was a fairly even game with the teams playing quite similar styles of football, but with the energy-sapping heat slowing things down. Wealdstone will point to their greater number of shots, although about half of them soared over the bar. After starting the stronger we survived a couple of scares with a shot cleared off the line and Scriven making a fine save a few minutes later.
We began to get a grip on the match in the second half, with Stefan Payne breaking down the right. He set up a wonderful chance for Matt Hann who couldn't quite get a touch at the far post. Stefan then scored a great individual goal to put us ahead. But once again set pieces were our undoing, as Wealdstone scored from close range after we failed to clear first a free kick from near the centre circle then a throw-in close to the corner flag.
We're now seven points behind Dartford who are starting as Dover did last season. We really need to get back to winning ways next Saturday.

We started well and had the lion share of play for 20mins then started to get overrun in midfield (again) Stones ended the half on top and Kevin pulled out a wonder save very reminiscent of Gordon Banks allah 1970, one of the best I have witnessed. Second half we bossed the first 20 again and SP slipped his marker turning him inside and out before cooly slotting home. The equaliser a minute later should of been ruled out for a clear elbow in the face, but it meant Stones grabbed the initiative and the last 20mins saw our midfield completely overrun (yet again) we panicked and the winning goal was on the cards and it was only going one way.
Our midfield is not strong enough we defend far to deep with AJ far too often being the last man with the last ditch tackle. When our attacks break down the opposition get a free 60 yard run to our box only then deciding to defend. All our attacks come down the channels and nothing through midfield as we lack anyone to win the ball and play it. I am sure Dos is working on it but if we don't sort it we will not get the potential out of gifted players we have as you have to earn the right to play and that means being strong when needed. In all 6 games we have played we have been out muscled and outplayed in the middle for long stages in all of them.
I though Wealdstone were the better side overall today and we failed to test a poor keeper particularly on crosses.

That's why we're signing Alan Pouton OS. We lost the game in the last 20 mins after Stefan's brilliant solo goal - he really is a gem. Firstly the free-kick for the first goal was needless & TBH, I thought our defender (AJ?) jumped into their fellow and I was half expecting a penalty before the ball fell to their bloke to score.
The second was due to a topped attempted clearance & possibly a mis-judgment by Scrivs but I don't blame him. The save he made in the first half was outstanding, I have no idea how he got to it. As CoSec said reminscent of Ian Stuart at Spennymoor in 1974.
Have to say though, Stef's goal was our first shot on target & the only other was from Sam Gargan's free-kick.
I would've ben happy with a point today but the midweek bogey continues. As was last seaon it took us until mid-October to record a midweek league win - I do hope we can better that this time. I don't think we played badly but we need a big mobile guy in midfield. Let's hope Mr Pouton is the man for the job. If the Dover fans are anything to go by, he is!!

As far as the midfield is concerned, we started with both Cobbs and McKimm today in a bid to win more balls between the penalty areas. It worked up to a point in that we were still drawing 0-0 when Steve went off in the second half. Unfortunately his replacement James Hawes looked off the pace and contributed little. At least he was out on the wing, with Danny Phillips moving infield, but we did look weaker after the change.
I agree with OS that we defended in depth, but there may have been a good reason for that. Dos will have known that Wealdstone have a lot of pace up front, and by playing deep we deprived players like Ngoyi the space to run into.

Maybe but I would like to see the players we do have in midfield working a bit harder to stop these 50-60yard runs, rather like they did, or even Man Utd did to Arsenal a bit of tugging a little trip nice and high up the pitch, I just don't think we did that?

... The equaliser a minute later should of been ruled out for a clear elbow in the face, ... I don't think that we can complain about the final result but photos 24 and 25 HERE in the lead up to the equaliser would seem to support the suggestion AJ was fouled.

Indeed it does & a guy on the 'Stones forum suggested as much too. As I said earlier fom my angle it looked as if AJ jumped into his oponent! However, it was noticeable throughout that the ref gave very little for fouls during aerial challenges and this appears to be another such occasion.

Sadly only arrived 10mins before HT (thanks Southern, you shithouse excuse for a rail company), so can't really comment on 1st half. But second, I thought we did well from the re-start and deserved the lead. But after that, we just stopped.
Introduction of Hawes and Bradley W-G didn't help. Neither got into the game or even did the basics. In the end we were carrying two passengers. The winner was coming as soon as they equalised.
Impressed with Stefan more & more each time I see him. Quite like Gargan too.

Should have kept hold of Collins. Lack of pace + defending very deep = goals + points lost

It was his decision to leave. Anyway, he has broken his ankle, so he's not playing at all at present. Poor bugger.
