English football was failing on the international stage, as much as I hated it at the time it has done a lot for the best football, though it hasn't be so kind to the lower leagues. But the Championship is still the 4th most watched league in Europe, behind Bundesliga, La Liga and the PL. That's pretty impressive.

Bearing in mind that we have a Premiership, a Championship, and two Conferences above us, I quite like the fact that we are playing in the third highest LEAGUE in the country.

Beaney I'm not sure that you're right. Didn't we get to the semi finals of the WC in 1986 and the quarters 4 years later. The Premiership started in 1992 I think and we failed to qualify for USA 94. I wouldn't say we were failing.

The games would go on longer, the ball is currently in play in the premier league for 40 odd minutes.
The rest of the time is taken up by players diving on the floor feigning injury, arguing with the ref and substitutes crossing themselves, kissing each other (and the ground) and praying to the skies.
Also ludicrous two minute goal celebrations....................

Also,a free kick from 25 yards nowadays turns into a Cecil B DeMille production. If a penalty is awarded three minutes can elapse while they argue about it.
And another thing ,why does EVERY single game on Sky,not that i watch many any more, kick off 3 or 4 minutes lates and end almost 2 hours after the scheduled kick off time ?

Italia 90 = Death of football. Dreadful. The final was farcical, one goal and that was a penalty.Four years later and the final was 0 - 0. Look forward to the biggest cheatfest of all in 2010,i'll be at the Cricket most of the time.

Try and watch the 1958 World Cup Finals film currently showing on ESPN.
You won't recognise it as the same game.Teams go forward in numbers and try and score goals - the opposite of what's going on nowadays.

I didn't mean the finals themselves, I meant it was the time when the English bourgeoise suddenly became 'footy' fans and centuries-old stadia were turned into all-seater anodyne tanks full of face-painted bell-ends.
