If there was standing water on the pitch at 2 (as reported) and heavy rain forecast for the afternoon, it was incompetent to pass the pitch as playable. We did not see the pitch at 2pm so cannot argue with the view it was playable, and although I made a jibe about it yesterday we cannot know if the ref was right or wrong at 2pm?

I phoned the club at 5 and an ansa machine told me "they" weren't open again till 4th Jan! After hearing that a pitch inspection had taken place and the match was on I drove to Bromley from Wrythe Green. Got there at 5 to 7 to see 3 people wandering around wondering if the match was on. We all went into the ground through an open door. Through to the dressing rooms (deserted) and then down the "tunnel" onto the pitch. Back outside we found a small piece of paper pinned to one of the turnstile entrances' stating "v Sutton United 29th Dec 2009 match off water logged pitch" What a shambolic way to announce the postponement. Could the sign not be bigger so we didn't have to hunt for so long!? I had a feeling as I drove off that their might be a few more supporters turning up wondering what was going on! I hope they had quicker luck finding the "small" piece of paper with the big announcement!

To put the record straight. I was contacted by the secretary of Cray during the morning, to inform me that the pitch had puddles on it, and it was still raining, and as the pitch had been played on the day before, the groundsman had not been able to get on it. The match referee was informed and insisted that he would do the inspection, as he was not working and did not live to far away. Just after 2pm i was contacted by the secretary at Cray, who informed me that though there was still standing water on the pitch, the match referee had looked at the local weather on the web, and said it was scheduled to stop raining at about 4pm, he was going to inspect again at 6pm, much to the surprise of Cray and ourselves. During the afternoon, the rain continued, Cray then contacted the referee again to come in early, but he said he would still arrive at 6pm. Which he did, and took one look at the pitch and called the game off. Dos and myself, both questioned the referee on his action during the day, as he put alot of players, management and people out, as they had to travel long distances, and that the weather forecast that we all saw, apart from the referee was for rain. He stood by his actions and decisions. Cray were as surprised and dismayed by his actions and decisions as we were. But the bottom line is that only the match referee can call a game off, even if it is inspected by a local ref.

Or the "George Davis is innocent" brigade. That's one for the older cricket lovers.

Some pitches at this level would probably be no worse if they had holes dug in them!

Four years at University gave me plenty of time to listen to all five days of Test Match Special radio coverage whilst watching low quality internet footage of the game streamed from a mud hut in Bangalore so consequently i've picked up all manner of cricketing facts and stories without really realising.
